After one hundred years in the Isle of glass I had become considered a healer of skill, I had learned about medicine and basic magic enough that I was accepted as an equal of many who had studied far longer than I had. The training I already had in medicine in my old world helped in not only putting me far in front of my peers but also, I brought new knowledge in that field. I was considered someone who in the future would do great things, yet in the world of my birth the second world war was just starting, like I said time flowed differently.
After being on the Isle of Glass for three hundred year I was teaching the arts of healing as well as also was being taught the inner mysteries of the old ways, those reserved for the high mages. One of the honours of being an acolyte of the inner mysteries was to serve the Elders and Mages of the Isles as they held their sabbath prayers at the tomb of the once and Future King. I had risen far faster in the community than anyone since the great Merlin.
As my learning continued I learned more of the secrets and the future that would unfold, humanity in my old world was doomed and the constant wars since the war to end all wars was just one of many symptoms of the disease of its society.
The last time they had tried to guide the world of man by creating the Once and Future King they had almost been destroyed. Only the combined magic of all on the Isle in removing the lands into the mists and out of time had saved them and ensured they continued. But they had left the stain of Mordred in the lands of Britannica and that had spread to infect the world. Now that stain was on the verge of bringing down mankind and the only people who could act would stay hidden on the side-lines. Only after the fall would the king wake and take up his sword to take the old ways back out to Britannica and the wider world.
After another three hundred years my training was complete and I was made a Mage, yet still my memories of the suffering of the Great War remained. Those memories merged with the thoughts of the fall of mankind to come and after months of the return of nightmares that I thought I’d left behind I decided I could no longer stay on the side-lines.
I had been on the Isle of Glass for over six hundred years yet looked and felt like a man in his mid-twenties and the world I had left had changed beyond recognition. Yet still I chose to leave my new life and try to prevent the fall of mankind, I would try to remove the stain of Mordred. I didn’t need to save the world but just cleanse the nation of what was once Britannica.
To be continued.
(This story I am making up and writing as I go along, each part is being written the night before I post it as I sit with a few glasses of whisky. As yet I have as much idea where it is going as the readers of it.)
Keep it going - "As my learning continued I learned more of the secrets and the future that would unfold, humanity in my old world was doomed and the constant wars since the war to end all wars was just one of many symptoms of the disease of its society." - Great writing
