Beware holiday makers of the dumper wave in the shallows at Mooloolaba, no-one escapes ......

in story •  5 years ago

Let me share my most embarrassing holiday moment ever that was acted out in front of hundreds of holiday makers on the beach at Mooloolaba. It is forever burned in my brain, never to be erased.

I was scared so badly that I have never been back in the ocean at this part of the Sunshine Coast since. I made a vow not to!

Here is my sad story:

My three kids and Ben were still having the best time with their boogey boards. They were all completely oblivious that their mother and the love of Ben's life was going to experience the most dire life threatening circumstance. I really could have done with his helping hand or anyone's helping hand! But no, my family were as inspecting as me.

Looking back, I too could have stayed out with him but I had had enough fun swimming and floating about in the ocean. It wanted to sit on the beach under the beach umbrella.

My tumultuous action started as I, totally unaware what was going to take place, reached the dumper wave. It flattened me and then somehow rolled me. I managed with some struggling against the force of the water to stand up only to be rolled again in the most ungainly non-elegant fashion. As I came out of the roll in a kneeling position I just managed to adjust my togs, they felt they were around my knees. Then in a second, or so it seemed, down and around I went again.

It was after the third dumping that I was determine to get off this roller coast of a wave. Hair was plastered over my eyes, my mouth was full of sand and I was sure that the ocean had swiped my togs. I knew what I had to do, I needed to crawl fast before the wave could form into the dumper again. Crawling faster than I have ever done in my life I was going to get past this dumper, and thank the Lord I cleared the danger zone.

I recall the sand burn on my knees and trying to stand as elegantly as I could. I gazed over the beach to see who had been watching the entertainment. Did I see the eyes of all the holiday makers on the sand look down and pretend to be busy. I was so sure they all had smiles on their faces?

It was at that exact nano second that the realisation hit me! I was not a lone victim of this dumper wave, every unsuspecting tourist on holidays at this gorgeous spot on the Coast must go through this washing machine initiation. that is why so many people sit on the beach looking at the ocean.

And like many of these now wise people I was only going to paddle on the edge of the water and sit on the sand under my beach umbrella, watching the entertainment of unsuspecting tourists get dumped and rolled over and over on the water's edge.

Along with my smug beach companions I have seen many go through the washing machine rolls.

Cheers and Blessings

That’s a scary thing to happen Angie @angiemitchell. Thankfully you escaped the dumper wave and got to shore.

Lovely flower drawing on the beach.

Hahaha, it is a laughing memory now Jo, that was never to be repeated. Although a couple of years ago I decide that I would try the boogey board and got hurt when a strong wave rammed it into my chest. I never learn, lol.

Haha! that sounds like great entertainment for the experienced beach watchers! Nice beach scenes bytheway.

Better than being rolled, flattened and half-drowned in the dumper,🤣

Very true! It sounds like a right of passage for ocean visitors to go through!
