The sword was still in its scabbard, bereft of blood. It’s been years since the Samurai had last fought. He was happy to have it rusted than to use it on someone. He had taken a day job as a freelance programmer, mainly because he was from a different epoch in history.
It was a bright Monday morning. He was going on his bicycle, which he had named ‘Wisdom of the Sun’. The light went red, he stopped. The street was filled with children, whom he liked watching. They were hopscotching the patterns of black and white, painted on the face of the road. There was laughter in the air. He would learn the art of learning from them and apply this knowledge in his daily life.
“The children were probably going to an excursion to the zoo”, he thought. Then he went on to continue his journey after the children crossed. He turned his head back to have a final look at the beautiful souls. Suddenly, he noticed a construction worker getting unbalanced at about sixth-seventh floor over the bunch of children who were standing right beneath. That guy had a ton of bricks with him, about to fall on the children. The samurai instantaneously summoned strength from his Iaido. He peddled as fast as he could, cycling his way on a one-way road. He would reach there in time, he had to. During these moments, the students were not moving at all. He tried to shout but due to sounds of horns, his voice didn’t reach them. He pulled out his katana, he jumped and pushed about two dozens of kids, preventing them to fall under debris. He cut through most of the bricks. People saw a man in a suit doing a dance of his blade. They started clapping in awe as if they knew what was going on.
One of the bricks fell on his head from the seventh floor of the building. He sustained severe head injuries and collapsed bleeding profusely. Eyewitnesses rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. According to the doctors, the injury had fractured his skull, and he died from internal bleeding and damage to the brain.
Death by a single brick on the head, not a good way for a samurai to die. But still, he would be remembered for his courage and bravado. Not everyone died that day, but that one person who saved kids. He was just a just a nobody, who saved everybody…
Everyone that was born, has to die. Yes, even the greatest warriors of the century.
