The 'turning' of Teuku Umar was such a great advantage for the Dutch to facilitate their missions in Aceh
There are many interesting tales and events in Aceh's history to be discussed, especially during the Dutch War in Aceh (1873-1942) and one that was ever written was Teuku Umar.

The presence of Teuku Umar is not a happy history for the Dutch. Cut Nyak Dien's husband was censured and the name "traitor" by the Dutch but also awarded the title 'Teuku Johan Heroes Commander of the Great Nederland'.

Teuku Umar who lived in his time (1854-1899) from the beginning until now still raises a big question mark, why? The figure of this one indeed invites click amazed and there is controversy in it.

Not a mystery also stored in a person named Teuku Umar Johan Pahlawan. How he was able to convince the Dutch by pretending to be a Dutch henchman, then the incident of the Navy of 1884 involving him was one form of his genius.

Two Faces of Umar's Face

116 years ago, we know a figure as well as Minangkabau Minangkabau Acehnese fighters, Teuku Umar. He said that Teuku Umar was the only Aceh war leader who moved directly from Aceh troops to the Netherlands. He was labeled a traitor by the public, but became an idol in the hearts of the people of Aceh. Teuku Umar is one of the many stories that emerged during the Dutch war in Aceh. Umar became one of the many Acehnese who supported the Dutch, but Umar was different from the cuak of Aceh in favor of the Dutch, even though the title of "traitor" remained attached to him.

As happened to this Acehnese historical figure, previously, Pang Tibang experienced the same thing, being considered unable to lobby the international world, a traitorous title was carried, he was so called that he could not be able to dialogue in a foreign language. Teuku Umar is different from Pang Tibang.

Teuku Umar who initially fully supported and led the Aceh forces against the Dutch Colonial, suddenly turned around. In 1883 Teuku Umar came to surrender to Governor Van Teijin and was ready to support the Dutch troops. Umar entered military service and was ready to fight against Aceh troops.

When Teuku Umar joined the Dutch troops, he defeated Aceh's defense posts. Teuku Umar was given a greater role by the Dutch. However, his heart still belongs to the people of Aceh, the strategy is just a trick to take the Dutch weapons. The same thing was also done by him in 1893, this time he surrendered to the Governor of Deykerkhooff in Kutaraja. The two faces of Teuku Umar's face are again shown.

Three years of strengthening the Dutch in the second period, Teuku Umar has really convinced the Dutch with his loyalty. He turned into a European. The moment lasted between the period 1893-1896, before the events of one day dated February 11, 1899 that deliver "Teuku Umar Johan Hero" to the area Mugo for rest for ever. But three years after his service, he again made a big surprise when he decided to return to Aceh and lead his troops.

'Manipulation' Teuku Umar

Teuku Umar is well known in psy war and manipulating words. This expertise is certainly a lot to know. Especially the skill of manipulating tactics when facing a war. Mobilizing the masses, burning the spirit of the people, and giving speeches in front of the Aceh troops seemed to have been synonymous with Teuku Umar's work both before and after the war with the Dutch.

One time, when Teuku Umar talked with his wife Cut Nyak Dhien, he was asked his wife why he sided with the Dutch. Umar replied firmly after hearing the question. "They do not know, just let history prove it," he answered. An answer that has many meanings. Or it can also be seen how he manipulated the words to win the heart of Cut Nyak Dhien and successfully married him.

It was true at that time, Teuku Umar unexpectedly 'sided' with the Dutch after a long struggle with the Acehnese forces. As is known, Aceh troops under his leadership lost the logistics of war after comparing Aceh's arsenal with the Dutch. That is the focal point of Teuku Umar and must cross to the other side.

This obviously raises the pros and cons among the people of Aceh since the past until now and has always been an interesting historical topic to talk about.

In other words, Teuku Umar wanted to show that in fact the quality of Aceh troops in the Meulaboh region is no less great than the Dutch troops. Even if there is another meaning, he may wish to say that the Dutch troops would not be able to fight with Aceh if the weaponry and other war logistics equipment were exactly the same as those of Aceh's troops at that time. Evidently, in the heated battle in Meulaboh, the Dutch were overwhelmed by the Acehnese forces over the fierce opposition. As a result, the Dutch often replace the war leadership.

That is Teuku Umar who has an unusual pattern of thinking with the perception of ordinary people. Says he shifts the angle of view. This is what then makes Umar break the opinion of many people. Teuku Umar, who from the very beginning, strongly opposed the Dutch presence in Meulaboh, then even sided with the Dutch, although the end, returned to the Acehnese bosom.
About Teuku Umar, not a few who glorify him because his genius word process, mixing war tactics and as a symbol of the leader of the people of Aceh in Meulaboh can not be doubted. However, not a few who call it a traitor. The Dutch themselves fired him and revoked the title of 'Johan Pahlawan' he was holding.

One of the highlights of his war tactics is that Umar not only prepares his troops with defensive and offensive tactics, but also burns his soldiers mentally with an exhilarating remark.

He described the Dutch as kaphe, then went on to say "Udep Share Matee Syahid." Umar used that condition to incite his troops to fight furiously with Dutch troops equipped with modern weapons.

Heaven has been waiting

In the battlefield, Umar's tactics can sometimes be just as difficult to guess. Indeed, the tactics belonging to Umar are not only pegged assault against the Dutch. As an expert in micro-tactics of war, at least Umar has divided two Aceh troops. One Acehnese army was placed in the forests to continue guerrilla, and one more force remained in order to continue to fight against the Dutch. Each Aceh troop under his command in the field usually has roel (duties and roles) respectively. And usually the role is given with great detail. Did not Umar contain a philosophy as to how an Acehnese forces should survive.

Teuku Umar knew that the Dutch troops would do the scorched earth tactics, man-marking the Aceh troops in an all-out way, and he was not wrong. Dutch troops had been instructed for tight guarding, setting up military posts, and launching indiscriminate attacks. However, instead of the dependable Aceh troops, the Dutch troops were frustrated by the fierce resistance of the Aceh army.

Teuku Umar's transfer tactics to the Dutch side remains a mystery as to why Umar did so. One popular argument says, Umar is not satisfied with the arsenal of the Acehnese forces. Given that the Dutch troops were much more powerful than the Aceh army. Teuku Umar as if to tell his troops that he had no other choice and had to become a European. For the Aceh army, Umar seemed to say, "if I join, I will definitely take the Dutch weapons and will fight again with you against the Dutch caphets."

On the one hand, Teuku Umar's 'turn' was such a great advantage for the Dutch to facilitate their missions in Aceh. However, do not forget, the Dutch will face Teuku Umar with Aceh troops. If only, one day was February 11, 1899 nothing happened, who knows, Teuku Umar who has the mystery of the mystery, have the next plan and the manipulations of the hidden Umar.

Goodbye Teuku Umar Johan Hero, February 11, 1899 - February 11, 2015, your struggle remains our memories. *
