My first experience with a Horse.

Reminiscing. I really miss riding horses, free abandon, self-taught, first horse of my own at nine years old. Needed to step on an upside down pail way back then to climb aboard. He was older, late 20's, only horse my Dad could afford for me, as I recall for $50, former owners referred to him as an "old plug". He was a Calvary horse, still had the brand on his neck. He was called "boy". He was probably really something in his day.

My Dad taught me how to put a saddle and bridle on him and generally how to take care of him, but otherwise, Boy and I learned to ride and become a team together. He wasn't an "old plug" with me. I probably pushed him further than I should have.

One time we were galloping down a hill and he stumbled. He ended upside down in the roadside ditch, me beneath him, but fortunately for me, my head was above the water in the ditch and I was able to pull myself out. Poor Boy was stuck, upside down in that ditch, and there was some blood on the side of his mouth and I was beside myself with worry and panic.

I tried to get him up, but he was literally wedged in that ditch. It finally took a truck with a pulley to get him out. He was so pissed off when he finally got back on his feet, kicking and screaming and running all the way back to the barn.

All I could do when I got back to the barn was to take the gear off of him, lead him inside, and hug him, then feed him, and I fell asleep on his back that night in the barn, until Dad came to get me.

My first horse.
