I Would’ve Preferred Good Morning

in story •  7 years ago  (edited)

I’m the early riser in our home, regardless if it’s a week day or a weekend, I always wake up a few hours before my wife. This morning was right on schedule. I had been awake for about an hour and a half, having just poured my second cup coffee and catching up on crypto news, my wife got out of bed. “Good morning,” we exchanged, “you’re gorgeous” I told her, she responded with a smile as I tended to my second morning cup thinking ‘I’m the luckiest guy I know.’

Her morning routine also starts with a cup of coffee. She walked toward me from the kitchen holding her cup by the handle in one hand and cradling it with the other. She got comfortable on her half of our oversized captains chairs and took a cautious sip from her cup while reaching for her phone. No crypto for her. She’ll go through her emails and she may thumb through quora for a minute but that’s about it, her thing is languages. Right now it’s Spanish. It’s been about a year since she started learning Spanish. On this particular morning, however, today! on her phone was a text message sent from our friendly neighbor at 2:12am - It read:
Oh @puravidaville (The text message said her name-name) I’m so sorry. Your car has been hit by a drunk driver (one of three cars). The driver took off. I ran outside. I have a small piece of the drivers car that has a serial # on it if you want it. I’ll be up for a little bit or we can talk in the morning.

For this one I used an iPhone camera:

Ka’pow!

I’m surprised the vehicle that caused this multi-car incident was capable of driving away. I hope the driver of that fleeting truck isn’t injured - The amount of force required to push an SUV through a car, into a third car and up onto the parking curb is beyond my calculation skills:

I’m no insurance adjuster either but I know the entire rear end of that SUV will need to be replaced so a total loss is most likely the destiny of vehicle #1. Vehicle #2 can be repaired, it’s an inconvenience for the vehicle owner but nonetheless, it’ll be back on the road in no time:

As for us - Vehicle #3: Not at all what I was expecting. After reading the friendly text message from the neighbor, first thing this morning, I anticipated walking out to a smashed door and/or fender or worse. Nope! We got away with one this time:

Good game, bumper!

Quite a bit of paint chipped away from the bumper and the license plate assumed the shape of a wrinkled t-shirt but that’s the extent of it! Had that Kia not been utilized as an absorbent between our car and the SUV, this post would’ve most likely had a different tone. As it stands - Two gentlemen missed work today, nobody is injured that I’m aware of and the sun has yet to set. Although I would’ve preferred “good morning,” over learning of the hit and run that damaged our vehicle, I’m still the luckiest guy I know.
