THE PLOT

Long ago in an animal kingdom lived the wisest animal ever called the tortoise.

He was believed to be the wisest animal in the kingdom. He was full of himself and very proud.

He does not take any advise from anyone or seek council from anyone.

This four legged slow beast only believes in walking and talking to only his kind for he believes they are more superior in knowledge and understanding.

His reputation precedes him.

He earned this as a result of his deeds in the past.

However, overtime his character changed and his behavior to other animals.

The other animals detested his behavior.

They all decided to humble the tortoise so they gather together in the open place discussing on the strategy to use for the tortoise.

Since the tortoise is very smart, he will notice something was fishy if they met in secrets which would arouse his curiosity.

The tortoise does not concern himself with discussions of other animals.

This made it easier for the animals to conspire against him without any suspicion.

They come up with a plan to exploit his weakness.

First a diversion to draw his attention.

To pull this off, a task was given to the mouse to carry an heavy bag up on a tree.

The stage was set and ready.

On that day the tortoise was going about his business when he saw a mouse struggling to carry a bag up a tree.

The tortoise approached the little mouse and said "you are to small to lift this bag at your back"

The mouse turned and replied him; it is the only way to carry an heavy bag up the tree.

It is known that the tortoise always wants to prove that he has a better way of getting things done.

Moreso, he does not listen advice from other animals.

The little mouse told the tortoise to put the bag on his bag that it would help him climb the tree faster.

Tortoise could not believe his hears.

He would not give into taking advice from any animal not to speak of a mouse.

So he decided to put the bag on his neck.

When he started to climb but he could not make any progress.

In his quest to show his ultimate wisdom , other animals showed up one after the other till there was a huge gathering.

At this point, he became much more desperate to finish what he has started.

He struggled all day till it was evening all to no avail.

He turned back in shame.

All eyes were on him.

He became nervous then he cowardly asked the little mouse saying; How do I go about this?

The little mouse smiled that his cheeks were almost connecting with his ears.

He gave him the instructions as he stated earlier.

Put the bag behind you then climb up

The tortoise did it as instructed then placed the bag properly on a branch on the tree.

Then it occurred to the tortoise.

Why did you want the bag on the tree for you do not live here?

One of the animals came out, a monkey to be precise who then explained to the tortoise in native Yoruba Language

ẸNÌ KAN KÌ Í GBỌ́N TÁN
(no-one is an island of knowledge)

The monkey went on telling him that they gathered to discus how to get him in such a situation. The mouse was a bait put in the path he passes by everyday.

So their entire relied on him interacting with the mouse which they hoped would happen as it did.

Also they knew he would want to prove to the little mouse his wisdom which he also fell a victim of.

This event opened his eyes that others that he does not have all the knowledge as he thought he did.

This story was what led to the proverb to correct and teach people that thinks they know it all in Yoruba land.

Nice! Tortoise in our Naija folklore is funny; sometimes he wins in the end, sometimes he loses in the end but he is always tricky in the process.
