Learn Basic Knowledge about HIV/AIDS !!! Understanding The Human Immuno-Deficiency Virus

HIV is not like others viruses, including those that cause the "flu" or the common cold, but there is an important difference over time; the immune system can clear most viruses out of the body.

This is not case with HIV, as the human immune system cannot get ride of it. This means that once somebody has HIV the person has it for life. It is know that HIV can hide for long periods of time in the cells of the body and that it attack key part of the immune system called the T-cell or CD4 cells.

The body has to have these cells to fight infection, but HIV invades them, and uses them to make copies of it and then destroys them.

However, not everyone who has HIV progress to AIDS, with proper treatment called "ANTIRETROVIRAL THERAPY" (ART), one keep the level of HIV virus in body low. ART is the use of HIV medicines to fight HIV infections. It involves taking a combination of HIV medicines every day or has proscribe. This HIV medicines can control the virus so that one can live a longer, healthier life and reduce the risk of transmitting HIV to others.

Factors increasing the risk of Sexual Transmission of HIV

• Lack of circumcision in men
• Co-existence of untreated STIs
• Viral load of infected person
• Non-use of barrier methods (condoms)
• Type of Sexual contact.

Prevention of Transmission of HIV

Decreasing the risk of being exposed to:

A- Abstinence
B- Be faithful to your Sexual Partner
C- Consistently use male and female condoms

Others

• Delay age of Sexual debut
• Decrease the number of Sexual Partners
• Undergo voluntary testing and counselling to know your HIV status
• Treat STIs
• Males should be circumcised
• Sterilizing or not re-using sharp objects
• Screening of blood and blood products for prior to administration.
• Universal precautions for health workers.
