The Truth Behind Why Henry Was So Long-Winded to Liza

Expanding the thinking behind old children's folk songs

Due to how my mind wanders around finding things to connect, I managed to bring up the old children's song "There's a Hole in My Bucket" while chatting on Twitter.

Of course, Sesame Street did their own version, if you aren't familiar with the song.

For a more classical version, here is one done by Harry and Odetta Belafonte

Basically, the song is a back and forth of why Henry hasn't fetched a bucket of water. Liza continues to give Henry instructions on how to fix the bucket and Henry comes back with more questions. This eventually leads the conversation around to getting more water in the bucket with the hole.

Now, it would seem that Henry is just lazy and doesn't want to fix the bucket. This could be true. However, I see it as this sort of situation.

Henry has been down this road with Liza before. Since Liza holds the purse strings, Henry knows he has to do more to convince her to give him the money to go into town. Liza, most likely, holds the purse strings because Henry had mishandled the money in the past, probably more than once. Also, Henry probably got into some trouble the last time he went to town or had a habit of getting into trouble every time he went to town. Liza can't trust Henry to use the money as intended, but Henry wants to get away from the farm and he needs a reason.

In the end, Henry is successful, because he has exhausted all of Liza's tricks to avoid giving him some money to get a new bucket, because he can't fix the old holey one they have. Now, whether Liza accompanies Henry to town to get a new bucket is something to be speculated or was probably put into another folk song.
