I Spent My New Years in the Hospital!

Twas the night before the New Year and all through the town, every person was drinking ready to go downtown.

So me and my friends from high school converged this year, as we did last, on Madison to celebrate the new year. A few of them attend the University of Wisconsin Madison, so accommodations aren't hard to arrange. This year started off great as we caught up, drank, and laughed through the afternoon. Things started to pick up as we got buzzed and most of the guys started playing a drinking game with my friends roommates. Us remaining ventured into the kitchen where we found a hoop attached to the door. (I will show a picture later). We couldn't find a ball, so we wrapped a toilet paper roll in tin foil and called it square.

The game was Extreme Kitchen Basketball, or XBA. Similar to the extreme football leagues, which had a brief existence, there were no rules except score. My group of friends are extremely competitive and physical so we knew this could get out of hand pretty quick, but my thinking was that we would break the kitchen before we broke ourselves. My hubris was my downfall.

The Play

It was the game point, and me and my teammate had just stuffed my friend on the opposing team. My friend tossed me the ball, but I fumbled with it and dropped it on the ground. In the midst of my fumble, I reached down to grab the game winning basket and that's when my friend slammed me from the back into the dead bolt lock on the door. Blood started pouring from my face to the floor and formed a couple foot puddle on the ground. Shocked, I thought my nose was broken and started laughing, but my friends quickly informed me that wasn't the case. Instead, a big Harry Potter gash bleed from my forehead.

Also, funny note to the story, so just before we started playing, we were laughing about a video circling the internet from the Extreme football League where a quarterback got knocked out worth watching, it is hilarious.

After the cut I kept repeating those two quotes from the quarterback, except of course, for the XBA.

I was also under the impression I didn't need stiches, but was convinced otherwise. So I slammed a beer for the pain and took a trip to the hospital ER for the patch-up. One of his roommates was sober so she was nice enough to drive us. It was real nice of one of my friends (Kubi) to stay behind from the bars and help me through the whole process. It only took a couples hours and six stiches later to get all patched up. I had a good time joking with the hospital staff, who were excellent by the way. First time getting stiches too I might add. After I was all stitched and received a tetanus booster, I was all clear in time for midnight!

As much as I still wanted to go out, I thought better not to and instead me and Josh settled for a few beers and Qdoba. We also took a commemorative photo at the scene of the crime.

It was a crazy night and led to a great story. It was sure a way to start off 2018. Long Live the XBA!
