Monster Hunter International - Larry Correia

Read by Oliver Wyman

The Story

From the book jacket:

Five days after Owen Zastava Pitt pushed his insufferable boss out of a 14th story window, he woke up in the hospital with a scarred face, an unbelievable memory, and a job offer.

It turns out that monsters are real. All the things from myth, legend, and B-movies are out there, waiting in the shadows. Officially secret, some of them are evil, and some are just hungry. On the other side are the people who kill monsters for a living. Monster Hunter International is the premier eradication company in the business. And now Owen is their newest recruit.

It's actually a pretty sweet gig, except for one little problem. An ancient entity known as the Cursed One has returned to settle a centuries-old vendetta. Should the Cursed One succeed, it means the end of the world, and MHI is the only thing standing in his way.

With the clock ticking towards Armageddon, Owen finds himself trapped between legions of undead minions, belligerent federal agents, a cryptic ghost who has taken up residence inside his head, and the cursed family of the woman he loves.

Business is good.... Welcome to Monster Hunter International.

As stated above, this story is very much a man's story. It is about a man.

There is more to it than that though.

The descriptions of the guns and equipment is a gun-nut gone wild kind of situation. The monsters are bad-ass, the guns are bad-ass, the hero is bad-ass. Now, I know... This sounds all too boring, right? Just a bunch of hyperbole about guns and monsters. To a point, you are correct. Strangely enough, there is a story involved though, and it's great. Our hero, Owen 'Z' Zastava Pitt is well trained by his ex-military father in the ways of being a bad-ass, but he doesn't really get to use it. His accounting job has him safe and sound. The twist that brings him into the world of monsters and Monster Hunting is quite entertaining on it's own.

The story that comes after it is even better. It has the benefit of always keeping you engaged, that is a definite thing.

This really sets up for an amazingly fun series.

The Narrator:
Oliver Wyman

When you need a someone to narrate a man's book. You pick a man's man.

This is the perfect casting in my opinion.

Every time he announces a chapter change, I just grin at the over-the-top 'trailer-guy' tone to it. It makes everything seem more epic, and more bad-ass. No issues with pronunciation or inflections. He even manages to do a decent female despite all the testosterone he has to exude into this performance.

It's really quite impressive.

In Summary:

If you are looking for cheap thrills, decent plot that really fleshes out as each book in the series comes along, and a generally good time.

This one is for you.

Rating - 9/10 - Will still respect you in the morning.
