in story •  7 years ago  (edited)

I am very pleased and honored to present the very best short shorties from the creative bunch of steemians who submitted their fiction work in the To Tell a Tale of a picture CONTEST#8 curated by me ( @dpatcher ).

To Tell a Tale of a Picture is turning out to be very very interesting, exciting and helpful contest for steemians who love to write or newcomers want to exercise their writing skills. As a curator, I get blown away by the ideas, stories and imagination of contestants. I believe these contestants should be recognized and their creativity must be appreciated.

STORY -1 (WINNER)

The Escape by @eaglespirit

Julia was sold into slavery at the age of five for one silver dollar. She was forced to sing on the streets or risk a beating.

When Julia reached 12 years old she was sold to a local pimp to earn a living pleasing men coming from America. She had two kids by the age of 18 years old and dreamt of running to America.

Her childhood friend Miguel promised to help her escape, and one day the opportunity came. Miguel told her to meet him at the playa and a boat would be waiting to take them to America.

Story by @eaglespirit tells the story of unfortunate girl Julia. This story reminded me of people from deprived and unprivileged third world society. Their struggle for better life is commendable. It does brings the images of movie Slumdog Millionaire in front of my eyes.

STORY -2 (GREAT STORY)

Echoes by @chuddy

I could still hear him laugh
As I made my way towards the beach.
the sound was all too familiar.
this used to be my dad's favorite beach.

As kids we never really had much, dad was a carpenter.
I could remember the blisters and bruises he tried to hide from us even with the pain it never stopped him from tying my shoe

The first time we came to this beach was on my birthday, he had promised me a gift but we had no money so he took me to the beach instead.
I was only 9 then.

Above write-up by @chuddy is reminiscence of precious and intimate memory. This piece has a humane sensitivity and life in raw. I loved the Title- Echoes very apt.

STORY -3 (GOOD STORY)

Remember When by @jumpatthechance

“Daddy will love this place” Said Catalina, the eldest of the three sisters, “he loves coming taking us to the beach.”
Melissa piped up “yeah, remember that time he took us hunting for crabs in the rock pools” “We have so many good memories of coming here” Elisa added.
The girls walked along the thin stretch of land protruding into the sea. Held hands and sobbed quietly as the wind took their father’s ashes into the ocean.

STORY -4 (GOOD STORY)

A Strange Presence by @iamthegray

Jim sat at the bar watching as the sun bade the sea goodbye. From the corner of his eyes, he saw his wife and daugters run along the beach. Kelly, his second daughter, was pulling his wife by the hand while Sherly followed in the rear.

He left the bar without raisng attention and walked to the other end of the beach and waited. Soon, his family came running towards him. He streched out his arms for a hug.

Kelly felt an odd presence as she ran. If only her father was still alive; he had an answer for everything.

STORY -5

My three daughters by @mistermercury

My three daughters. Who could ever have dreamt such a thing? Not I. But here they were, running toward me jubilant in the energy of youth. How could such beautiful creatures, so full of love have come from me?
Such a wonder.

Their happiness was not clouded by the memory of their mothers passing, only a year ago. Just down the beach a bit. I came to her to late. Not even a spark remained. Nothing. Just another ugly death.

One develops a fine sense of things, and so I knew they were waiting for us back at our room. They would kill me and then the girls. Their eyes dark and blank. I had done so myself. I knew. But death would not visit today. I knew the back ways and we'd vanish into the night. Bright birds in flight.
