Chapter Seventy-Five
Matthias led Jenna up to the suite Anna and Jess had recently vacated and went straight for the fridge. He tossed a beer to her and cracked one open himself then flopped on the couch. She took the armchair and opened her own beer taking three long swallows before letting her head fall back against the cushion. It had been a long flight, suddenly she was exhausted.
“So, did you learn anything of interest on your trip?” His expression had turned serious and she felt herself relax. She was too tired to engage in his usual flirtatious banter and was grateful for the safe non-sexual subject.
“I did actually.” She took another sip of beer and tucked her legs underneath her bottom before elaborating. “It seems Dominique- the seer relative that rescued Aunt Harri from her medicated zombi state- devoted a lot of her time over the years locating others she suspected to be of Faerian blood. She calls herself an avid People Watcher, but what she watches, or watched-these days she’s usually too tired to leave the house-was anyone who seemed to take note of the shadow men."
"She’s kept extensive lists including names and addresses. She was quite the little investigator until just a few years ago, discreetly following people she suspected were like her. Of course sometimes it turned out to be nothing, and in most cases the people were just a bit more sensitive to the presence of evil- not actually seeing it, just feeling it like I used to. So while they may have Faerian in their blood, without some sort of catalyst like the ceremony in London that caused me to start seeing demons and Anna to start seeing past vamps dim mode-their abilities stayed dormant. In fact she only knows of three people still living whose abilities extend to actually seeing them.”
Mathias looked thoughtful. “I imagine anyone who can’t actually see them would dismiss their feelings out of hand. People are very sight and sound oriented, but especially sight. See it to believe it, and all that jazz.”
“Right.” Jenna’s eyes danced and Mathias raised his eyebrows then slowly smiled.
“You have these lists,” he stated.
“I do.”
“And since you know that latent abilities can be triggered into full on supernatural ones….”
She nodded, her face breaking into a grin. “And I have help. The woman who called herself the Mistress and performed the ceremony in London, Contessa De’laCouer. Well obviously her gatherings serve as a trigger so I met with her and filled her in on everything. With the help of online locating services we were able find most of the people on Dominque's lists, and Contessa will be sending her followers on a “girl scout” type mission, only they’ll be giving something away rather than selling it. Dominique wrote a detailed little book dealing with supernatural intuition. It’s so well done it doesn’t come across hokey, in fact if a person has the smallest amount of belief in things unseen they’re likely to believe it plausible.”
She took another swallow of her lager before continuing. “Along with a copy of the book they’ll also be handing out an instruction pamphlet on how to access the full extent of one’s abilities to “sense” the supernatural. Now granted there are likely to be those who fear dabbling in what they might consider “occult” practices, but if they’re anything like I was most of them will be curious enough to give it a try.”
“What happens if these “girl scouts” hands the package to someone in the house who tosses it in the garbage?” he took a long swallow of his own beer and raised an eyebrow.
“They’re going to hand it directly to the person who needs to see it, even if that means they have to return several times.”
“And then how will you know which ones actually follow through and “access” their abilities?” He folded his arms across his chest.
Jenna smiled. “Once all of the books are passed out Contessa is going to a post a large, very specifically worded ad in the newspapers where these people reside. It will of course contain an email address and a contact number. Dominique and Contessa will meet with each person who calls at local coffee shops and pubs, then set up a larger meeting, one in which I hope to recruit some of you to attend.”
Mathias made a face, but a sly smile replaced it. “What’s it worth to you?”
She frowned at him. “I would think that anything to help the fight against demons would be payment enough.”
“Ah but a bunch of civilians who just started seeing “shadows” are more likely to get themselves in trouble than be of any actual help. Unlike the McClaron’s or our buddies in Europe they don’t have any training.” He lost his smirk and looked thoughtful again. “In fact I think those guys are the ones to make your proposal to, they might see a way for them to be of use, see what potential they have.”
She nodded, “I plan to run this by them. I just thought that having a few vampires would be an added bonus, make it more real to them, not to mention give them a measure of comfort that we have “supermen” on our side- but Anna and Jess can help with that, I certainly don’t need you.” She looked away wondering why it even bothered her, Anna and Jess were more than enough to aid her, not to mention Jared, all he’d have to do was the earth shaking thing and they’d be convinced. They’d probably drop to their knees and swear allegiance right there.
“I was only teasing Jenna. If it’s important to you, of course I’ll go.”
She blinked and looked back at him. Damn it, she thought, this was how he got through her defenses, these glimpses of a truly decent being behind his normal smart-ass mask. His expression was sincere and she found herself entranced by his beautiful green eyes. She pulled her gaze away and took in the rest of his features. His blonde spiky hair was such a contrast to his tanned skin it made him appear exotic.
She noticed he was smiling a little and turned away, her face heating as she realized she’d been ogling him in silence for over a minute. She could see his smile widening from the corner of her eye, please don't say something stupid, she thought, knowing she would definitely snap if he did.

It's good to see Jenna again. I think she will be able to help Jess and Michael, and that Jess will certainly help Jenna. If things don't happen soon for either of these Gals they are going to have whatever passes for a case of blue balls for women. ;-}

Nice exposition. I'm glad they were able to get through it without going to anything sexual haha! Jenna was able to hold most of it until the very end. I hope they would be able to rejoin the other before they, ahem, rejoin.
Interesting to see how Jenna would react to Jess. I hope that after the dust has settled, Jenna discovers the real reason Jess didn't come into contact with them. Sparks would fly.

Glad to see they are having more of a connection towards the end. A way less trying and stressed relationship than Michael and Jess, or Anna and Jared. The tension is light hearted at most. Makes for a good balance of diversity and dynamic of different connections within the group
