I’ve been into cars as long as I can remember. One of my earliest memories is being in the backseat of my father’s canary yellow 1969 Dodge Charger R/T with black racing stripes, smoke rolling into the back windows as he burned the tires. This happened when I was about three years old, needless to say I get my love of cars naturally.
The amount of vehicles I’ve owned in my thirty years of driving could probably fill one (small) wing of Jay Leno’s garage. It all began with a coffee-colored 1968 Chevy Caprice, which probably got ten miles per gallon, if I was lucky, and was as big as the QE2. Then came a 1960’s Honda 350 motorcycle. Next in line was a white and gray 1986 Honda CRX HF, I can’t help but smile when I think of the memories made in that sporty little two seater.
Down through the years I traded and swapped a successive series of cars of all shapes and sizes but only a few were truly memorable. My last car, a 2010 Honda Fit, was one of the special ones. It wasn’t fast but was engineered better than any car I’ve owned. It handled like a sports car and hauled like a station wagon, it was truly magical.
I recently passed the Honda on to my parents and got a used candy apple red 2016 Toyota Prius Three. I bought the car just before my trip to Brooklyn to work on the HardFork Series. I figured what better way to get to know a car than a cross country road trip? I had my sights on a Prius for a long time and riding in @dougkarr ’s Prius during my last trip to New York in December sealed the deal.
We loaded our beagle and three weeks of essentials into the Prius in mid-January and began our journey. Before we even got across the Wisconsin state line it was apparent that this 4th generation Prius was a significant step forward in automotive engineering. This didn’t quite handle like a sports car but was far more responsive than the “driving appliance” nickname that the rabid gasoline worshipping Prius-haters tagged it with.
Interior
The ride is whisper quiet and sound insulation is more than adequate to muffle road noise. With the back seats folded down we had plenty of room for two large suitcases, a beagle, and all of our other essentials. The seats provided well-balanced support even for six or more hours of driving per day. The interior quality was equally as impressive, this one has the two-toned beige and gray interior scheme and I love the contrast in colors and materials Toyota chose.
Every surface you touch in the cabin is soft to the touch and appears to be of high quality. One of my favorite interior features is the wireless mobile phone charger on the center console (you can see the white-framed charging pad at the bottom center of the photo below.) Toyota's Entune app pairs my iPhone perfectly with the car's infotainment system to play music and synch my phone's contact list. Oh and my wife thinks the steering wheel looks like E.T.’s face...I tend to agree.
Exterior
The 4th gen exterior design of the Prius is polarizing. People either love it or they hate it. Overall, the sharp angles of the exterior design remind me of a stealth fighter jet. The front of the car looks like a scowling eagle swooping down and deliver a death blow to its prey. I happen to find a lot of humor in the fact that an eco-friendly hybrid looks so damned ferocious.
Like most Toyotas, fit and finish of the car is outstanding and the paint, a color called hypersonic red, is stunning. I can’t wait to get a coat of wax on it in the spring to see how it will glisten. My favorite exterior feature and of the car are these gorgeous, zig-zagging LED tail lights that are about three feet high. It might sound silly but the tail lights were the singular feature that got me to start considering the 4th gen over the 3rd gen Prius. We were following one on the freeway at night a few months ago and I thought it made the car highly visible in the dark and was just a cool design feature.
Driving and Performance
There’s a learning curve to the Prius. Through its center electronic display Toyota gamifies driving. The touchscreen display gives you “eco scores” that rate the efficiency of your driving as well as a display that shows you, in real time when the car is running on the gas engine, the electric motor, or a combination of both.
The first week or so I found myself distracted by this flood of information that was constantly being displayed...so much so I had a few close calls on the way to New York. Thankfully, Toyota had upgraded the software, which must’ve happened wirelessly at some point during our stay in Brooklyn. The new interface is totally different and far less distracting.
Acceleration is more than sufficient, especially when trying to merge or pass at highways speeds. The electric motor emits almost an imperceptible high pitched whine and, to my surprise, the gasoline engine even gives a little growl when the transmission kicks into overdrive. Lack of power was my main beef with the Honda Fit, acceleration was peppy from a stop but seriously lacked power above 45 mph.
The Prius has Normal, Power, and Eco engine modes and I've left it in Eco so far since there's less wheel slippage and there's ice and snow everywhere now in Minnesota. Steering is tight and responsive. There's four wheel disc brakes and, despite slight initial hesitation due to the regenerative braking system, when they stop they stop hard and fast.
Final Thoughts
After three weeks with this car, I absolutely love it. The owner’s manual is about 800 pages and many Prius owners, including me, recommend you read it cover to cover. After all, this thing is part car, part supercomputer and the better you understand how it works the more joy it will bring. With the Prius, Toyota hasn’t built the perfect car but they have built the perfect bridge between humanity’s fossil fuel thirsty past and our cleaner EV future.
We drove 3312.2 miles to Brooklyn and back. The car was loaded with a two adults, a beagle and a few hundred pounds of cargo, our average highway speed was 75 mpgs (or greater), and we averaged 48.1 mpgs (mostly highway) on the trip. We only spent a total of $147.49 on fuel during our round trip.
Let’s face it, the only way you’ll smoke the tires in a 4th gen Prius is to dowse them with gasoline and set them on fire but the car does have a combined hwy/city cycle average of 55 mpg and looks mean as hell standing still.
This will be the last car I own with an internal combustion (gasoline) engine. My next car will undoubtedly be a Tesla S or 3. For the next few years, I'll enjoy the tiny but mighty growl of this Prius’ gasoline engine while slowly becoming accustomed to the high-pitched whine of its electric motor. This car is training me for a more responsible future in all the best ways.
Yours in the Chain,
Eric

Really? like 800 pages for a manual?
who on earth is gon read that?
where i come from, people do not read manuals. it's a "buy and drive" scenario
I personally love Mercedes Benz product cause of its class. Next to mercedes is Toyota.
The company is available for all (rich, middle and low class), like very affordable.
it has taste, like they are very well designed to meet human taste/desires.
and they have a product for everybody, from a sportsman to a businesswoman, from a tundra brand to a Toyota matrix brand. And everybody seems to find what suits him or her with the band.
BTW, @ericvancewalton, ur whip is beautiful. and the colour choice too is top notch.

I always buy my cars a year or two old. I paid about 2/3rds the price of a brand new Prius for this one and it was a one owner lease return with 26,000 miles. There are many of these on the used car market here in the U.S. for $5k-$7k, they say you just have to make sure and have the batteries tested to make sure they're okay before you buy them. The hybrid battery costs about 2 or 3 thousand dollars to replace.

I'm sorry to say that I have probably honked at you in traffic. More than likely multiple times actually, even considering the minute odds of our paths crossing on the roadway.
My horn gets more action than Ron Jeremy, and I don't even live in NY.
I drive so much for work and no doubt about it, people who drive Prius's are possibly the worst drivers. I don't like painting with such a broad brush, but you're giving mini-van drivers a run for their money.
But I'm sure you're not one of the bad ones, right? ;)
Aint that the truth, HA! Got any pics of the bike or CRX?

Funny @intothewild! "more action than Ron Jeremy"...that made me laugh out loud. I'm surprised I haven't damaged my horn I use it so much here in the Twin Cities...there are some horrendously awful drivers here!
I've heard that same thing so many times about Prius drivers. I have to admit I WAS one of them until about a week ago. A combination of that software update and more experience with it has, hopefully, made me better. The software, pre-update, was very distracting.
Here's a photo of the Honda motorcycle I owned. I'll have to dig for a pic of the CRX.
Thanks!

A 1968 Chevy Caprice? Wow, I like it.
My first car was a 1976 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. It was a hulking Metal Beast that was painted light blue on the outside and had giant white vinyl seats included with it's amazing 8-track. I had all the Earth Wind & Fire albums.
That car definitely looks really good on the inside. I can't help but wonder about performance though.
A couple of years ago I got lucky and found a great deal on an older Volvo S60. I think it gets something like 210 horsepower and let me tell you something..... that sucker can fly.
I guess if you got a family then being comfortable is the most important thing. It sounds like that car really does have all of the amenities.
I think I would have a difficult time though going from this car with it's powerful metal to the pedal, to an economy saving model.
It really is a great looking car though. Do you really have a license plate on the front that says steemit?

The '68 was like riding in your living room. Lol. Oh, the Monte Carlo is a classic now too! Your description of it brings me right back to the 70's. My wife and I still listen to E.W.&F. : )
The Prius definitely isn't a performance car by any means. It accelerates quickly enough for traffic but you won't get that "plant you back in your seat G-force" that you would with more horsepower. It's not super nimble handling-wise either. I'll try to save my thirst for performance until I get my Tesla in a few years.
You made a great choice with the Volvo S60. That brand is bullet-proof in more ways than one. They were so far ahead of their time through the 60's and 70's with their engineering and safety features. It's amazing how many of the older ones you still see on the road.
No, the plate is Photoshopped. : ) Thanks, @jeezzle!

Yep and that power almost got me in trouble. I was going down a winding road, passed a cop and saw him attempt to turn around. Excellent review of this vehicle! I've been a die-hard Toyota since I got my first used Corolla All-Trac wagon in 2000 after 15 years of owning nearly every model of the old Volkswagon from a super beetle to a squareback to a van. I'm on my 3rd Toyota and am always impressed after driving anything else how I long to be back in my Toyota that is the perfect balance of comfort, high performance, affordability and quality. I wanted to get a Prius last time but couldn't afford it and went with a used Venza which is fabulous, yet doesn't have the gas mileage and I envy the usage stats from your trip! Fun post :-)

Thank you, @natureofbeing! I've always been a Honda-guy myself but they didn't really have anything in their line up to compare to this. This is my first Toyota and I can understand why they have such a loyal following.
Did you own a classic Beetle? I LOVE those cars. I'd like to drive one someday, in fact those would be the ideal car to convert to an EV.
The Venza's nice! A good friend of ours bought a Matrix about 10 years ago and has never done a thing to it aside from regular maintenance. He'll probably have it for another 10 years. I always buy my cars used (I look for one owner lease returns) and got a very good deal on this '16 Prius, it was almost $10k less than what it would have cost new. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

Eric, I thought of you last night as I was watching Jerry Seinfeld's series "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee". He's really into old cars and each 15 minute episode begins with a rundown of a gorgeous old car of some kind and then the rest of the time is him and another comedian driving around. That show has grown on me and you may enjoy it. The short episodes are perfect for a little break. On youtube and netflix both.

Wow..what an amazing car, Ruth! It looked like it was in perfect shape too. Those Beetles have always fascinated me for some reason. I saw a perfectly restored 1960's model in aquamarine last year and had to take a picture of it. What was your impression of owning one? I've heard some legendary stories from some past owners of them.
I love that show...one of my favorite episodes was with Micheal Richards (Kramer). What a smart, funny, and extremely sad man. The word is Seinfeld is bringing back his sitcom. I hope it's true and I hope it is as good as the first one was. Hope your week is going well!

Yeah, I owned two of the CRX's the '86 HF and a '91 Si and they were amazing cars. The '86 was my favorite, by far, even though the Si was much more powerful, looked better, and had more features. It sounds like we are definitely Prius geeks! I find myself reading the Prius chat boards pretty often to learn more about the car. The only accessory I've bought so far is this envelope style cargo net. It works really well to secure loose bags and other things in the hatch area - https://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Toyota-Accessories-PT347-47101-Envelope/dp/B00540GOMY

I have taken so many trips with it packed full for festivals and such, camping gear, food people and even though its SUPER PACKED still get 45+ miles per gallon!

A great write up! Nice relaxed writing style whilst also informative. I am however curious to know whether you have had any experience of any other electric cars to be able to compare. I´d love to hear from you or any other steemies about the Chevrolet Volt. I read some magazine reviews when it was launched, but I´ve heard nothing since. I´m currently living in Brazil and all enquiries at Chevrolet dealerships were met with blank stares, and an ocassional, we have no date yet for the Volt becoming available in Brazil. I would of course love a Tesla, but I doubt that will be my first electric car, especially with Brazilian import taxes on vehicles. (100%!!!)
I spent many years on two wheels in the Uk, finally selling my best bike to date to emigrate.
A BMW K1200RS SE.!
Wow! What a dreamy machine that was. You may be amused to know that my only ´motorcycle´ since moving to Brazil has been an electric bicycle. Not cool in the least, but surprising fun!
