IMPROMPTU HAIKU (Your Participation is Requested)

in story •  8 years ago  (edited)

I’m going to try something different today and hope you join in. Most of us have attempted writing haiku in school because we were forced to.

As a writer, I’ve discovered that the act of writing haiku is a highly effective way to keep your skillset sharp and it also totally crushes the effects of writer’s block by opening up new channels of creativity.

Incase you've never heard the term haiku or have been out of school for a very long time (like I have) and the memories are hazy...the definition of Haiku is as follows:

Haiku is a very short form of Japanese poetry. Traditional haiku consist of 17 total syllables, in three lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables respectively.

This post is meant be highly interactive. I encourage you to write your own haiku in the comments below (first line should be 5 syllables, second line 7 syllables, third line 5 syllables)

Here’s mine:

Sunshine fuels my soul
sparking a kinetic chain,
that knows no limit.

Now try yours in the comments below!

that's deep, man

This is deep. Really nice.

Take heed, dear reader
A paradox I give you:
This is not haiku

Little runaway
Go back to your loving home
Don't leave mom alone

The dragon came down.
It scoured the land with flame.
The trees are all gone.

burninate the land,
burninating the peasants,
trogdor strikes again.

She is Khaleesi
The widow of Khol Drogo
Mother of Drogon

I took Japanese for four semesters in undergrad. Hardest course I ever took. I did learn one thing from it though:

Translating Haiku
from Japanese to English
always turns out weird

I agree! Some of the Japanese signs translated into English are hilarious!

Would you please share some
Funny Signs are welcome here
Always smile and laugh

Tomorrow is here
Embark upon its journey
And pass me a beer.

Cyrano was here
Following Shakespeare's nothing
Who knows where he went

I can't feel my face
The headrush is so intense
Couch-locked by sundown

Awesome @ericvancewalton! I didn't understand how writing could be fun until the last month.

Deep in a cavern
a hidden pool of water
is consumed by fire

So glad to hear that, @edgeland. I'm having just as much fun sharing all of this with you guys. Thanks for participating!

Streets filled with joy rage
Yesteryear's dream of darkness
Sea of empty clouds

This isn't mine. But how often do you get the opportunity to share a Haiku. Being a science geek my favourite haiku is:

Hippopotamus
Anti-hippopotamus
Annihilation

winter nearly gone
from Land of the Long White Cloud
still enjoy the rain

A lover my best friend
My thoughts my dreams my feelings
Nothing hidden secrets melt

A day on the lake
The water reflecting light
The fish were biting

A life without trees
is like an ocean without fish
and sky with no stars

Swimming is calming
It is never too boring
fingers wrinkling

Just when I thought I could live again,
the wind blew me off.
The dark had always been waiting.

an essense of Steem
something cryptically mystic
with or without me

Universal mind,
A symptom or condition
Of learning to live

Walking downhill my
Back to the sun I notice
The flowers face me

Nice one!

@ericvancewalton "Let go of what is out of your control. Really let go. Don’t just say that you will. Learn the lesson. Forgive the past. And move on."

My first haiku is
This haiku you are reading
It was fun to write!

They are on Steemit
Writing Haiku with frenzy
Hoping to gain coins

Eric Vance Walton
ending steemit writer's block;
hail the haiku muse

Japanese Haiku
This lines limit is seven
Syllables per word

Seven syllables per word?

That would be something like "unconventionality", "electrophotographic" or "perpendicularity".

An intersection
perpendicularity
is conventional

Wow, some great submissions so far! Thank you all for your participation! I'll be contacting the winner of the free book after this post times out in about 17 hours.

Its darkness consumes,
When despair sets in the soul
It devours all

Under the ocean
Colorful gardens abound
Seahorses hiding

In your Quantum Self
The true Power lies
Waiting for "you"

I had quite good luck
Nothing lasts forever though
Now it is all gone

keep up ur great writing @ericvancewalton

I may not be seen
Nor recognized in the scene,
I'm reality!

String of words stretches
In a language not my own
Flexibility

It is a fun game
Weaving words to the rule
Haiku poetry

This one from Basho is really poignant for todays evening in the mountainous valley I am in. Although I really prefer his poertry in Russian, since I can't enjoy it in Japanese.

all night
autumn winds being heard
behind the mountains

Oh, here is another one, on my condition:

Peregrine man
Has got no fixed address
Can't claim any prizes
;-)

This is tremendous fun. Ok, another one:

Impromptu haiku
Game of tremendous fun
Enjoyment is mine

Wow, @xanoxt, I'm thinking you have won the prize! Is there an address I could ship to?

I could probably give you my mothers address, since I will eventually visit her. Or brothers. How can I contact you? :-)

Great, you can email me at - [email protected]. The book is yours! Thanks for participating.

Thanks for the fun game!
I'll contact you as soon as I figure where it would be more convenient to ship to. :-) As I said, peregrine man has no fixed address, at least not right now.

Wind blown leaves accrue
In the clear night cold stars bright
Warm tea steams a bloom

Excellent!

Thank you.

Thank you for your children's time
Nightmares! Love The Man

Have you seen a whale?

A lot of minnows want one.

A dolphin will do.
