How can it already be six days since I’ve posted? 2020 is already passing more quickly than any other, which is a good segue to my next point.
Back in 2015 P.S. (Pre-Steemit), my wife and I were at a local happy hour with four other friends in Minneapolis and after a lengthy discussion about how different life was when we were growing up in the seventies we determined three things:
- Time is going way too fast;
- people back then knew how to have fun and gave it more of a priority; and
- in this day and age hardly anyone we know spends enough time with their friends.
"Friendship is the hardest thing in the world to explain. It’s not something you learn in school. But if you haven’t learned the meaning of friendship, you really haven’t learned anything." - Muhammad Ali
As ideas born during happy hours usually do, this idea quickly escalated into a grand scheme.
What if we throw a party every year for our friends after the holidays just to get together, have fun, and hang out? Let’s serve food, come up with a theme, hire a DJ, rent a hall. Oh, and let’s ask our invitees for donations to a local food shelf.
Fast forward to 2020, we’ve had the party every year since. Thanks to social media, the event has sort of taken on a life of its own. This year’s theme was Roaring Twenties and the guest list was close to 150 people.
Here’s a picture all of us who plan the event every year.
Call it genetic memory, reincarnation, or whatever...I've always felt an affinity to the 1920's so I really connected with this year's theme. I was going for the Peaky Blinder's look. Did I pull it off?
These are mementos that my wife picked up for all of us who organize the event.
Here are a few shots from the photo booth and the dance floor.
This year's Roaring Twenties event was a huge success. We gathered friends, old and new, into a room for nearly five hours. We all caught up with one another, had fun, and forgot about the demands and challenges in our lives for a little while. I can't even tell you how much we enjoy watching everyone have a good time.
“Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.” – Marcel Proust
In addition to having all this fun we managed to collect a considerable amount of donations for our local food shelf, The Neighborhood House, in St. Paul. This was the best event yet. Now, to start planning the next one!
Life is short, never be too busy to celebrate it!
With Gratitude,
~Eric Vance Walton~

How original, @eric! I also believe that we should look for time to meet with friends. Friendship feeds on shared, lived moments! You came out great in the photos! Who removes that a Eric Vance Walton, poet, writer and traveler, has lived in the 20s. Cheers for those 20s! ;)

Hi Eric, I really enjoyed your writing, sir. I think that is a very good idea. Gather with old friends who grew up together in the 70s. Your clothes are also very unique. Indeed the 70s are not like today. At that time the meaning of friendship is very meaningful. social life and loyalty still prevail at that time. You are truly fortunate to have a wife and friends who are very loyal. Have a nice day, sir.
