STILL THE BELL TOLLS (An Original Poem)

in story •  8 years ago  (edited)

Once we had
broad shoulders
and callused hands,
we were craftsmen
and held in high esteem
those who made things,
ingenuity ran in our blood

once we were young,
full of enthusiasm
we convinced ourselves
that our way was better,
we sold the world the fabric
of our idealism to weave
their own magic carpet

now we are lost,
we are listless
our eyes dead from worry,
our souls scarred by greed
we have all that we want
but not enough of what we need,
still the bell tolls

giving all we think
we have to give
and then we give more
to serve our corporate Lords
I fear that we will never
be able to replace
what they've subtracted
nor fully decipher
what's been redacted,
still the bell tolls

the foundation
of our empire quivers,
but the Lords are
too brazen to shiver
as we awaken
hungry in our cells,
still the bell tolls

we are catching fire
some call it revolution
but it's only evolution
to a higher consciousness
it's time for change
let's come together
and let the bell toll.

But it's only evolution"

Well said @ericvancewalton

Thank you! I feel it like never before!

@ericvancewalton nice one, u shud write more of such poems

Awesome!

We think the same way, Eric. I often wish I could go back and live in a simpler time. I often feel like a fish out of water.

I feel like the past wasn't perfect but used to have a tendency of thinking that way. Woody Allen's film Midnight In Paris (one of my favorite films) snapped me out of it. I love the resourcefulness, slower pace, and humanity of the past. I feel like we live in a time of such extremes and inequality. Things are changing for the better though, I really feel it. With coming tech advancements like A.I. I hope we don't lose the soulful parts of our humanity in the process.

Hi @ericvancewalton
Very nice poem.
I actually think things were easier in the good old day. Today we are all stressed out. With todays technology we are basically at work 24/7. We have cellphones, we have e-mail at home, we run businesses on watsap groups and are up to date and in touch with everything that is happening at work all the time. If something goes wrong you know about it instantly. In the old days it had to wait to the next day to receive your attention.

Today's technology is however wonderful, here I sit in South Africa commenting on and reading post from all over the world as and when it is posted, I can be in contact with people all over the world from the comfort of my sitting room, bedroom or any place where I have internet available.

Thank you! I totally agree, that's one of the premises of my novel. We must integrate technology in a thoughtful, balanced way to get the most from it. I hope to, very soon, become a digital nomad.

Ding Dong let it ring!

This is my favourites of yours that I've read thus far. Nice one! And you even found a photo of my depressing office. Seriously, looks just like where I work.

I'm glad you connected with it, @azurejasper! Thank you. This is one of my newer pieces and was in my latest chapbook, Emancipation. There's nothing more depressing than a cubicle! I've worked in many through the years.

Poems are better then the prose.

Thanks for the honesty. The novel was my first attempt but I've been writing poetry for 23 years. The second novel should be more polished.

My poem didn't take off. I think I need more practice.

Keep trying!

What I love here is how the young idealists, before they fell asleep as corporate drones, were selling the fabric of their enthusiasm. Not sharing or giving it, but selling it. Their very mood and hope was a thing of value that could attract wealth to itself. Love that.

Thanks, you are so perceptive!

Thanks. My @geke account here on Steemit is limited to economic & corporatist themes, but I'm also a creative writer and poet. I haven't put much of that up yet because I'd like to establish a reputation and following first, and I probably won't use the @geke account for that content. Right now I'm just admiring the good creative writers here and also watching to see what themes do well here.

The exponential speed of evolution excites me and delights me. Being part of a community full of creative idealists is awesome. Dreamers create the best futures. J.

It excites me and concerns me both. We're living in a time where we'll see more change happen, faster than any other generation in history. A.I. alone will guarantee that. I agree, it the dreamers who create the yet to be discovered future.
