The Good That Remains (An Original Poem)

in story •  7 years ago  (edited)

It's been quite a while since I've posted a new poem.

For this piece I decided to use a style that I first discovered on a wall in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It was a poem spray painted by a local artist.

For as simple as the technique is it's very effective, ingenious really. Breaking up the lines of the poem in unusual places, creates fragments of words. This causes the reader to take their time with it and focus a little more intently.

Enough of my rambling...I hope you enjoy!

The Good That Remains

Clothed in
an infinite
number of sym
bols, is your reality
to play with,
unafraid.

Our lives are ou
r greatest art, be
st appreciated in
a constant state
of wonder.

A lucid immersion
balancing lev
ity and weight,
a comfortable distance
from the gravity of empty
distractions.

Master a soft gaze un
touched by pain.
It’s hard to loo
k away, to not see
beauty in the decay,
the wise cherish the
good that remains
of each miracul
ous day.

really beautiful @ericvancewalton

Thank you Ruth!

Keep the positive vibes going my friend. Good post.

Thanks Juan! Hope you’re having a nice vacation in Louisville.

I really like your cool words. They are polished refind diamonds. How can we appreciate great soul, greater than your precious jems.It feels like you have collected pearl from deep end of the sea and decorated nicely@upvoted

Wow. I am speechless reading this poem. The brilliance of the poet is never in doubt. I am moved greatly by these fine lines:

Our lives are ou

of wonder.

If our lives are our greatest art, why then do some people live life recklessly? Why are some people very cruel? Perhaps they know not that their life is their greatest legacy.

Thanks, @grandhibaba! I think some people live recklessly because they are lost or stuck in a pattern of self-destruction. I'm glad you enjoyed this!

It is always my pleasure sir. I enjoy reading great writings.

You got it sir; the only way to enjoy life is to gain wisdom from the pain.
I like the way you got your words in the poem to cascade in the post.
😍

Thanks @rebeccabe! I'm glad you enjoyed this one!

really beautiful @ericvancewalton

Thanks!

This is really a nice style I must admit. Makes you pause after every break and think upon what was read.

I tried creating my style too. I have been sticking with it for a while. I always try to make it easy and simple, with choice of English and lot of rhymes, to capture people's attention by drawing their minds to it even if they don't want to notice the rhymes.

I will try and adopt this your style with mine.

Our lives are our greatest art, best appreciated in a constant state of wonder.

This really sunk in for me sir. Really.
We make our life into what we choose to. Our choices determines how we craft our lives. The unpredictability and wonders of life give it a little more twist and unravelling.

Well done sir.

Greetings, mr. @ericvancewalton. I connected inmediatly with your poem because here in Venezuela where, as you probably know, hard times run, your phrase "beauty in the decay" has a special sense. Only feeling ourselves flowing into the goodness and in a spiritual sense of the life we can find "the good that remains of each miraculous day."

Goodness is about character integrity, honesty, kindness, generosity, moral courage and the like. More than anything else, it is about how we treat other people...

Agreed. That is the best window into someone else's character, how they treat people that can do nothing for them.

@ericvancewalton, That would be golden thoughts indeed superior poem writing. I prefer to see this morning time here. I know you think and meditate before writing. Then can easily earn thoughts from deepest mindset. You focused nicely main topical now. After saw painted on a wall in Williamsburg, you get tremendous decision to write poem. Absolutely brilliant final production.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!

nice poem tnx for share

Thanks for reading!

Master a soft gaze untouched by pain.

Yeah. Takes me back to your post on meditation and i remember a line you made

If someone were to ask me what the most important thing is they could do to insure mastery of themselves it would be to sit down, close their eyes, and breathe consciously at least once per day.

we all should learn to once in a day/while, take off the pains we have and be grateful for even the most little/insignificant things. i feel that would be a helpful therapy..

thanks for sharing such a beautiful poem my friend

I appreciate your comment! Some much joy comes from appreciating what we have instead of always longing for what we don't have.

wow. i think this is my first @ericvancewalton poetry experience though.

On sunday (about 2 days ago), My Dog (Freda) put to birth, and somehow, i was around to witness it. i saw her go through pains, i saw her bark endlessly, i was about going into the room to help or provide any level of assistance, but i was stopped.

This was actually my first time to experience such and i really felt for the Freda.

Couple of moments later, she delivered 3 puppies and i guess the pain of one multiplied by 3. i went in to give her milk and i noticed the way she cuddled the puppies just like Humans.

And i wondered, what if she had died during this period, what if she had lost one of he babies? 1001 questions ran through my mind. But honestly, i had to appreciate nature more, i had to appreciate Freda more and truly,

I bet that was an amazing experience to go through @ogatailor! We have much more in common with animals than most people acknowledge. Thanks for reading!

Wow wow wow... Thats so on point!

Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks!

You're very much welcome Sir

WOW!

ok. first things first. How are you feeling today my friend. How are your eyes? hope you feel a lot better now.

Ohk, today, i looked at todays message in two perspectives.

Throw back to one of the perfect pause moments

I’ve had to shed many of these negative people in my life. Chronic drama kings/queens, complainers, gossipers, manipulators, liars, and naysayers will all get a very quick “ba-bye” from me.
None of us are perfect, but each and every one of us should be striving to be a better version of ourselves each day. If you see someone around you who appears not to be making an effort and wallowing in chronic negativity it might be time to say goodbye, for your own good. Trying to actively better yourself while being surrounded by negative people is like running a race with lead boots strapped to your feet.

once, w e really need to dissociates ourselves from the negatives. have a calm and neutral mind and really get to take a deep and personal moment.

Master a soft gaze untouched by pain and appreciate the good that remains.

One of my weaknesses is that whwenever there's something by @eric, i subconciously get my pen and paper and always write down..

You are a Fine writer my friend

Regards

Hey @eldahcee! I'm nearly recovered now except for some blurriness. Thanks for the kind words and I'm glad you enjoyed this!

That's just about perfect.
The foolish will never be able to appreciate the beauty of nature and wise will never look away.

A wonderful poem, my friend and you are right, your method of writing is very successful, it is especially suitable for a complete understanding of your thoughts, which you laid in these lines! Thank you @ericvancewalton

yeah. probably we might want to take our mind back to one of the meditation series.

Have you ever noticed that some people continually uplift you while others leave you feeling self-conscious, lethargic, and generally bad? Whether we realize it or not, the energy of those we spend time with is transferred to us. Sometimes this transference happens subtly and other times not so subtly.

and i'll love to come back to today's post

Whether we realize it or not, the energy of those we spend time with is transferred to us. Sometimes this transference happens subtly and other times not so subtly.

i guess if we blend both statements, we would have been able to decrypt a thought provoking line..

this is really an amazing poem filled with deep knowledge.

thanks again for sharing my friend

Beautifully written. After reading, a lyrical mood is created, I want to think about the eternal. Thank you for sharing.

I like the way this is written and the message in the words. I am always looking for new ways to project my creativity. I may have to give this a try one of these days. Right now I'm kind of loving on the blackout poetry. Thanks for lighting another avenue for me to explore.

Very beautiful poetry @ericvancewalton, I really like poetry, I think that poem has many benefits in our lives, every word of a poem has a very deep meaning, and poetry can be a very good motivation for us all. To produce a beautiful poem is indeed very difficult, we must have the soul of art, and every word we write, should be able to penetrate into the soul of the people who read it. Therefore I am very salute to people who have the soul of art, because the soul of art is not owned by everyone.

I also write poetry in my post, but my poetry is not good, because I am still learning to produce a beautiful poem, I have been writing poetry for a long time, but until now my poetry is not as good as others. I have much to learn again. Thanks for sharing, and wish you a wonderful day... :)

Great poet man. I took on a 100day poetry challenge, even though I never read or wrote any poetry. I am on my 69th day and I haven't skipped a day :)

I see you have experience with poetry. I never saw or heard this kind of format. I will talk about it on our poetry class to learn more about it.

I loooove this stanza. I agree that life is art, maybe even more than that. While we wonder we understand it more and more.

Thanks for sharing your great poem with us. Much love!

Beautifully written another great poem from you always a great time reading those :)

I've never seen a poem broken up that way. It really does create an immersive experience.

It's just a shame that we gain wisdom from age. If we could be wise when we are young then the world would be such a greater place.

There is Beauty in decay. Beauty in sadness.

I really enjoyed that poem.

The last stanza is awesome beauty in the decay ,i wanted to write also but am busy with my job all the time...

Like it very much and it is the first time I see words seperated in two lines. Reminds me of Goethe "The good is always near...."
