In Victorian Britain, it was traditional to read a ghost story for Christmas - stories with a holiday theme like "The Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens or regular horror stories like "Lost Hearts" by M.R. James.

So, if you have a little time in the next couple of days before Christmas, find one of these classic ghost stories and have a good old-fashioned holiday scare:

“A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens

“A Warning to the Curious” by M.R. James

“The Turn of the Screw” by Henry James

“The Body-Snatcher” by Robert Louis Stevenson

“The Willows” by Algernon Blackwood

“The Canterville Ghost” by Oscar Wilde

“Ligeia” by Edgar Allan Poe

“The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W. Jacobs

“The Phantom ‘Rickshaw” by Rudyard Kipling

“The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving
