Fairy Tales | Fragments of the Moon

The street light and the tree are friends.
That year, they were planted together at the corner of the street, becoming a strange sight in the city.
At that time, the city was still very small.

Many pedestrians passing by them couldn't help but take a second look. Because they are so close together, they seem to be one.

Even the street light thinks it is a tree too. It always imitates the appearance of a tree and beckons pedestrians. But it doesn't work manually.
And trees are always particularly moving when there is wind.

"I'm so envious of you." said the street light, "I've been standing here like a piece of wood."
"What's wrong with wood, I'm just wood." The tree comforted it.
"Well then, we'll be friends forever."

Indeed, they were presumably too famous to be preserved in the city's ever-changing process. Many street lights have been replaced and trees have been cut down, but they are still standing. It's like a couple.
"I wish we could stay like this forever," said the street light.

However, things always backfired.
A new mayor has taken office, and a new round of transformation is about to take place in the city. All the street lights have been replaced to be modernized and tidy, and all the trees have to be replaced with bigger and better-looking trees.
The tree was soon cut down.

That day, even the pedestrians passing by sighed, "The lights of the street light are dimmed, as if they have lost their lives."
And the leaves that fell from the tree became withered overnight.

A bird landed on the street light and couldn't help asking it, "What's the matter with you? You look very unhappy."
The street light was silent.

Later, the bird came to greet the street light every night, rested and sang on it.
The street light gradually became brighter.

"Thank you," The street light said, "Please tell me, what am I?"
"You are a bird," said the bird happily.
"Huh?" The street light asked in surprise, "But I can't fly."
"Not every bird in this world can fly. Some birds have their wings cut off when they are born. But I believe that you are a bird."

The bird's words made the street light regain its happiness. Every day, it looks forward to the company of this bird; every day, it lights up for her.
Then more and more birds stop here and they will sing together.

After seeing this strange sight, pedestrians began to discuss whether the street light had some kind of magical power.

When the workers wanted to dismantle the street light, everyone was a little bit reluctant. Many people came to watch, but the workers couldn't turn the screws no matter what.
"Probably, it's too old." The pedestrian said.
"Just saw it off." The worker said.

Unexpectedly, as soon as the chainsaw was turned on, a flock of birds flew over and pecked at the workers' hair, hats, and clothes, creating a mess in an instant. Many people picked up their phones and recorded videos.
A child said, "These little birds are protecting it. Uncle, stop sawing!"
"Yes, don't see it anymore." The people around also echoed.

The workers had no choice but to leave temporarily.

The next day, the workers planned to try again. But the video posted on the Internet has exploded: Many people say that birds have feelings, but humans are ruthless. How bleak the old age of the street light is!

Some people even wrote to the mayor's mailbox spontaneously, wanting to keep this street light. Many netizens left messages under this letter, and there were tens of thousands of replies in an instant.

More people gathered around this street light, saying that they should protect it like birds.
The workers had to give up.

At night, more and more people came to take pictures of the street light at night. There are live broadcasts and explanations. The children even danced around.

The birds that once gathered here gradually disappeared.

"I'm leaving." The first bird came to say goodbye, "I'm sorry I lied to you, you're not a bird. I'm going south for the winter. I hope you're still alive when I'm gone. Be yourself."

The street light was full of words ready but couldn't say it anymore.

After the birds left, fewer and fewer people came to take pictures. The street light returned to its former calm and solitude. On the corner of the city, the buildings next to it are all modern glass high-rises, which seems a bit out of place.

But no one said anything about changing it.

At some point, someone put a wooden chair under it. The chair is not big, just enough to sit two people.
But more often, there is only one person sitting here.

He sat here quietly, looking up at the street light, then at the sky. Before I knew it, tears streamed down my face.
The street light wanted to comfort him, but he didn't know how to speak. It guessed that it was probably a human being too.

But it remembered the words of the bird, be yourself. It also looked at the sky, and found that there was a round moon above its head, shining with light, which looked a bit like it.

Perhaps, I am the fragments that fell from the moon.
No and it doesn't matter.
At least, I'm in this city.
