Book of the Week: Ganesh Sitaraman, “The Crisis of the Middle-Class Constitution: Why Economic Inequality Threatens our Republic”

sitaraman.jpgThe backbone of society is its middle class. If there is no middle class, the very rich invariably trample the rights of the poor through their money, influence, power and their control of the economy and government, including the justice system.

In “The Crisis of The Middle-Class Constitution,” Ganesh Sitaraman says America’s middle class is under threat.

Delving into the history of the USA, he shows how a viable and strong middle class had beaten back some of the worst excesses of the rich and powerful.

When the very rich dominate politics and policy, rampant injustice results.

Laws that are being passed, regulations being put in place, and the pernicious influence of big money over politics have combined to undermine American society in favor of the super-rich.

The country, if it is not yet so, is close to becoming a plutocracy ruled by oligarchs.

The only way out is for the threatened middle class to counter the moves and measures of the very rich and the politicians who serve them by playing vital roles in politics and policy.
