[Last time...]
âI'll nae rest until Ah gie them both back safe! An' I'll dae everythin' an' anythin' tae dae it tay!" He said with grim determination.
âAhh know ye will Joshua...Ahh know ye will." Hack said as he stood up, âOch an' Joshua...it's New Year's eve. Th' men woods be sorely glad tae see ye oan deck tonight...?"
âI'll be thaur mate, I'll be thaur."
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
At five minutes to midnight the Captain stepped up onto the main deck and shoved his longcoat aside as he pulled his sword out of the scabbard and swung it high in the air!
âLit every cheil that's worth his salt grab a mug, an' prepaur tae rin' in th' Hogmanay (New Year) in proper navy fashion!" He barked to the cheers of the crew!
With a mighty stab of his sword, the Captain pierced the large keg of grog that sat in the middle of the main deck, letting a golden fountain of drink spill out onto the well-polished deck!
"Hip-Hip! Hooray! Hip-Hip! Hooray! Hip-Hip! Hooray!" (Everyone)
âDrink tae yer hearts content men! 1718 is drawin' tae a close an' th' year is jist moments awa'!â He yelled with a smile, âCockpit Mate- Midshipmanâs Mate Fisky?!â
âAye Sairrr?!â
âBring up th' ship's clock an' start th' watch!"
âAye, aye Sairrr!â
And so the countdown began as everyone stood tall with a full mug.
âThes is mah first Hogmanay at brine!" Seaman- Ordinary Seaman Ouncil said as he took a deep draw on his grog.
âMine tay (too)!" Replied Seaman- Carpenterâs Crew Ilipino as he licked the foam off of his lip.
âAam hopin' stoaner (hard) tae make 'Seaman- Able Seaman' soon!" Ouncil said as he wiped his mouth with his sleeve.
âYoo'll make it mucker! Jist keep raisin' yer hain (hand) an' daein' yer duty! Th' Keptin doesnae like a quiet sailur!" Ilipino encouraged.
As the two crewman drank their grog, Petty Officer- Shipâs Corporal Ickied and Seaman- Ordinary Seaman Knowledgement walked up.
Ouncil and Ilipino were quick to give Ickied a formal salute, but he brushed it asideâŚ
âNae oan New Year's eve men! Tonight e'en th' Captain is one ay th' men an' ye can spick (speak) wi' ease wi' onie (any) ay th' officers!" Ickied said with a smile as tilted his own mug.
Ouncil cocked his good ear to the conversationâŚ
âYoo mean Ahh coods spick tae th' Keptin directly?!" He asked in surprise.
âOch aye (Oh yes), it's a holiday mucker!" Ickied confirmed.
With that, Ouncil set down his mug and walked directly to the Captain who was standing in the center of the deckâŚ
âCaptain Sairrr?â
The Captain turned and spoke, âSlainte (cheers) son! What's yer nam?!"
âSeaman- Ordinary Seaman Ouncil SairrâŚâ Ouncil said nervously as he saluted.
âNae (no) salutes oan Hogmanay night mucker! What's oan yer min'?"
âWeel Sairrr...Ahh was jist wonderin' Sairrr...if Ahh might gang (go) ashair when we make Comoros?" Ouncil asked excitedly.
The Captain stroked his beard slowly as his deep green eyes looked hard at the ladâŚ
âGoin' ashair in Comoros is gonnae be a radge (dangerous) leave loon. Is seein' the fair wimins ay 'at islain worth it tae ye??!" The Captain answered with a smile.
âIt is sairrr!" Ouncil answered with a nod.
âThen yoo'll be goinâ ashores wi' a strang (strong) crew, muskets an' swords cheil (man)!"
âThenk ye Sairrr! Thenk ye!" Ouncil replied with a sparkle in his eye as he jogged back over to his group.
The Captain turned and faced the east as he thoughtâŚâA yoong loon who's ne'er seen battle ur a brown islain tit! Gawd be wi' heem!" He murmured to himself.
Just then, Fisky rang the ships bell twelve times to mark the stroke of midnight and the beginning of a new year!
âAwâ hail 1719!" The Captainâs voice boomed as they all raised their mugs in salute!
Following long tradition, the Captain and the officers then led the crew in song and celebration:
Officers:
Should old acquaintances be forgotten
Anâ never be remembered?
Should old acquaintances be forgotten
anâ days long ago.
Crew:
Fer days long ago, my dear,
Fer days long ago
We'll drink a cup oâ kindness yet
Fer days long ago!
Officers:
Anâ surely you'll have your pint tankard
Anâ surely I'll have mine.
Anâ we'll drink a cup oâ kindness yet
Fer days long ago.
Crew:
We two have run aboot thâ hills
Anâ pulled thâ daisies fine
But we've wandered many a weary mile
Since thâ days long ago.
Officers:
We two have paddled in thâ stream
From morninâ sun till dinner-time
But thâ broad seas have roared between us
Since thâ days long ago.
(Everyone)
Anâ here's my hand, my trusty friend,
Anâ give me your hand too,
Anâ we will take an excellent good-will drink
For thâ days oâ long agoâŚ"
