1st Basement Flood of the Winter & Other Things I Got Up To Today

in story •  7 years ago

It's That Time Of Year Again...

Basement flood season. One of the things that happens every year and lets us know spring is near. When we moved into this house our landlord warned us about the basement. Everything is kept up on tables because of the many different leaks downstairs. All it takes is a good rainstorm after the ground has been frozen and we get to go swimming :) I warned you that I would blog about this! I always deliver.

Our Weather Today in Hacketts Cove, Canada

I Was So Happy @Hendrix22 Was Home!

It started in the morning before Brendan went to work so he struggled with the stupid pump and hose while I took photos (usually the basement floods while he's at work). You can see why he loves me so much hey? I'm just charming.

IMG_4230.JPG

Gotta put the pump in a bucket with a screen so no crap gets sucked up and clog the pump, yes, it's happened before hahaha. We temporarily broke the pump that way one time and our landlord had to come running over with another pump.

IMG_4232.JPG

Not a bad flood at all so far, you will see much much better floods as the winter progresses to spring.

IMG_4234.JPG

You can't tell from the photo but there is a lot of swearing happening now, somehow there's a knot in this hose hahahhahaha!! How, how is this possible? Did we procrastinate putting it away properly last time? Nooooo...not us, we always have our shit together and are never a #hotmess :)

IMG_4235.JPG

Brendan Got It Sorted, Now I'm Home Alone

But as a Chicken Mommy I'm never truly alone...

IMG_4226.JPG

I give my ladies AKA The #ChickenBitches some scratch. They ate it and then proceeded to cower under the deck and in the barn until the storm subsided. Poor gals...the wind actually freaks them out a lot when it's this fierce.

IMG_4244.JPG

Rain was just pouring off of our roof, I tried to capture it through the window but it didn't really show up too well. The white spots are the rain lol.

IMG_4248.JPG

Baking Buns

IMG_4250.JPG

I love how hideous and creepy my tats look with crusted, dried up dough on them after kneading...my artist would be appalled.

The Rain Stopped By Mid Afternoon

And it turned out to be a beautiful evening...

IMG_4252.jpg

A reflection of the sunset shining through trees, in the glass of a print we have hanging on the wall.

Sunset after rain, lighting up the tree fort.

Casting its Heavenly Hue...

And one last pic...special for @joordanzzz :)

You can't tell from the photo but there is a lot of swearing happening now.

I can tell! 😂
I've had a similar ongoing issue at work it's like.....

I feel for @hendrix22 I know exactly what a bastard those pumps can be, I made a cage for the one we use here.

A least he gets to come home to your tasty buns!

image.jpeg

AHHAA epic comment TP! I'm sorry you have to be the flood man at work, that's lame. I sure hope one day you and the Mrs can enjoy some squidgy buns in real life!! xoxoxoxo

You know what it's like babe, all hands to the pump literally!

DQmektvHRyJBJG1KhvzFtGgPBaLwMPTdSMcZXhRm1w5hxEE_1680x8400.jpeg

Omg yes this is the best hahah. Thanks for the awesome dab lol. I remeber you telling me about the floods in the basement like yesterday or 2 days ago and here it is. It must be really annoying to deal with all the water 😒 but atleast spring is coming and the sun will start shinning on a daily 🌞 and atleast you have a indoor swimming pool hah 😂 great post @lyndsaybowes and thanks for the dab 👍

Omg haha!! I'm soooooooo happy that you saw this just for you!!! xoxo You are so very welcome, and thank you for seeing this post!! xoxoxoxox

Your welcome @lyndsaybowes haha 👍👍

Good day to bake buns (actually every day is a good day!) I don't blame the chickens. Our animals don't like wind storms either especially when accompanied by driving rain. I can sympathize with you about the water in the basement. When we lived on the farm we had a new house built and somehow the field tile was broken and redirected to the basement. We didn't notice until the first heavy rains came and the water in the basement rose four feet in one night! We used a 4 inch irrigation pump to rain the water then found the contractor to rectify the problem! Furnace needed to be replaced. Everything else survived.

Omg 4 feet in one night! That is incredible...that's deeper than the kids pool at the swimming pool whoaa~~~~

Yeah! All the water from a 100-acre farm drained into the basement! I was not impressed, to say the least...

Hey @lyndsaybowes I feel for you with the flood! I wonder how deep it would get if left to it's own devices? Not that I'm suggesting it! lol

I'm loving the sunset pictures, simply beautiful .. and a reward for all the bloody rain. It's s a beautiful day here today, shame I can't get out as I'm still awaiting the return of my car lol

Those buns have just reminded my stomach how hungry I am! Time for lunch I think. Another great post @lyndsaybowes whenever I'm having a busy day at work I just switch over to your blog and instant tonic! Keep up the good work!!

Aw, thanks for the visit my loving Friend! If left to its own devices...on a bad rainstorm, I bet we could get a few feet of water down there! Hell one time with the pump we got a foot, if the washer/dryer and furnace weren't on stands we would have been royally screwed!! xoxo Keeps things exciting though haha!! And I love excitement of any kind :) :) :) Enjoy your lunch sweetie!!!! xoxox

Yes, I always wanted an indoor pool... until I suddenly had one!
tip! Thanks for your support!

Ooh thanks so much for the tip you sweet Angel!!! xoxoxoxo

Ummmm awesome dab there!!!
Nice buns too😉 I could totally tell there was swearing hahaha!! I see the hose was a #hotmess too!! 😂

  • First low VP and now flooding ? :-r
for me it was an hour w/ tech support
  • My nose is imagining the smell of bread
  • That last picture haaha...

Gotta run!

My VP is coming back baby! I abstained from STEEM for the most part all day, god that was so hard!!!!! What was your support for? Shit blowing up on you over there?

I am gonna have to get you some of these buns one day :) :) :) Or you're gonna have to meet a nice gal and I'll give her the recipe <3 xo Unless you're up for the challenge? OverKillBuns?

Overkillbuns - hahahaaahahaaaa... I almost burned the kitchen down once, might as well complete the mission next time around ☺

I think tomorrow may be my steem break... I'm at 73 again... Things are complicated with my day work and it's sort of sabotaging my steeming... Need to do simpler posts, I've been killing myself with the 4 - 6 hour posts ☺

Need to pace myself and concentrate better.

Yeah, protect your Energy first of all! I cannot wait for the day that your day job fucks off!!

@lyndsaybowes, It's little bit flood condition. But give high warning through alert effects for be careful. How about wind condition? I guess all are ok and being good health.
Chicken family enjoying with rain. They find foods with walking whole group. I will find my favorite chicken next day. You've nicely taken background scenery under the rain condition.
Handsome tattoo design indeed. Who's handed one? Also breaking bun making me hungry and feel bun's smell now. Delicious. Mmmmmmm......
After the rain sunset and around nature created amazing designs and decorations. So beautiful. Excellent contribution.

One day you will have to come to Canada, and break bread with us, and pick your favourite chicken haha! :) Thank you for visiting my blog, and writing me such thoughtful words @madushanka!

Well prepared and still in great humour, wonderful to see. Well see if it continues at the storm progress. Have a cracking now now the storm is over 💯🐒

Oh I would NOT want to have to deal with flooding!! I think you’re allowed to be the “charming photographer” this time, if you’re the one who normally has to deal with it. :)

That one pic you took out the window with the greenhouse—just look at those monster flood puddles!! Ready to swallow you down! Of course to a kid those scream “splash in me!”

That would be heaven splashing in there...you are so right, I can't believe the boys didn't go for it!

It was a wild storm I can say but thank God no damage done...... And the Sun is back and more beautiful than ever.
The chickenbitches are so pretty waiting and anticipating your scratches
The buns are provoking my taste buds Hahaha...... Don't worry very soon, you will see me in Hackett's Cove, Canada, for breakfast. Hahaha....

That would be so great, we would welcome you with open arms Edith, maybe one day when we are all wealthy from STEEM you can come visit us with Xander of course too! xo

Yes, when we are rich, and I strongly believe steem will achieve that for us in the nearest future. Till then, you owe me breakfasts. And Xander will be so excited. Thank you Lyndsey, you have a heart of gold. Xo

You have a heart of gold too and I'm grateful to know you!!

So sorry about the flooding, that has to be crazy frustrating. The bread looks so amazing. I need to find a recipe sourdough. I too like to dab from time to time. Here is fine shot from as recent Florida trip....Lol

20171225_163016.jpg

HAHA!! YAY!!!! PapaCrusher haha!!!! I love it, and I'm SO showing this to my sons tomorrow!! :) You rock!!!

Do you have a sourdough starter yet?

Lol don't let the fat guy fool ya, I got moves! No I've heard people talking about the starter and the process but it's still a bit confusing to me. I definitely need to do more research. I do all the cooking in our house and I need to add some baking recipes in there.

Yes, step one is attaining, or creating your own sourdough starter. :) I had one on the go for like 6 months, and then I accidentally killed it! :'( Still haven't gotten another one...my inlaws and husband are sad, I was on a real sourdough roll~!!! I need a new starter!!

Could you do some grading or a perimeter drain to stop this from happening? We deal with similar stuff here, especially when the ground is frozen and then it rains. I should put some gutters up but I'm afraid they would just get ripped off by sliding ice and snow in the winter. Can you keep the pump plugged in so that it just turns on when you take on water? I went away for the evening last October and had forgotten to plug the pump in after we had some insulation work done in the basement. Wouldn't you know, it turned into a freakin' pool!!! Lesson learned, the hard way, as per usual!

Our landlord has talked about all of the above hehehe!! :) :) We'll see one day...

I'm really sorry about your indoor pool!!

Oh, it's no problem now, all dried up. But, supposed to be in the 40s this weekend and maybe some rain, so we'll see what happens then. Always an adventure!

That tree fort is awesome! 😍😍

It's great to see that the winter is finally letting over there. Been experiencing a change of weather over here too - from the annoyingly cold and dry harmattan to an only slightly more annoying heat.
Totally envious of your baking BTW, I would have to go and learn how to do that too.

And is there any chance your son could teach me some of his moves also? :-)

Yes, dance class starts at 8 pm sharp, I expect to see you here, there will be buns and coffee afterwards!

:) In all seriousness though, if you'd like to make my gramma Anne's buns, I have the recipe here with photo instructions: https://steemit.com/howto/@lyndsaybowes/my-gramma-anne-s-buns-make-me-so-hot

😀😀
Thanks for the instructions, can't wait to test my skills.

I can somewhat imagine @hendrix22 swearing while removing the flood water and including those nasty cheats damn flood, damn reward pool rapists 😆
Anyway, its nice the rain stopped. Stay safe and dry for the next one :)

Love the anime style drawing on the back wall! ☆dabs

Your blunt honesty is beautiful.
I can imagine how frustrating that must be...
^w^ but you guys take it and make it into a lulzy adventure of happy memories.
Alchemy at its best ♡

P.s ~ how do you make yar buns? They look so floofing nommy and perfect!

Eddie drew that anime :) :) I'll tell him you like it!

Here's my Gramma Anne's bun recipe!! Good luck <3 <3 <3
https://steemit.com/howto/@lyndsaybowes/my-gramma-anne-s-buns-make-me-so-hot

that title~LOL THANK YOU!!!

and awesome ^o^/ I hope we can pull together our work over at our online kids camp to help celebrate all things geeky and awesome that they love to do.

Great work Eddie~ Curious what his fav series are! :D

Have a wonderful day guys!

I can't resist this pretty scene when they are coming out of the heaven
meeting them coming out is better than meeting my girlfriend in the airport in that cold weather

Wow HatMan! It sounds like you love bread as much as I do, and that's a LOT!! :) :) hahaha!! Don't tell your girlfriend your words though, she may get a broken heart!

Whoa, that's quite allot of water and it's not even mid-Feb!!! From that photo with the greenhouse, it looks like the road is quite a bit higher than where your house is, based on that downslope.

You've shown quite a contrast between the flooding in the basement and those delicious looking rolls upstairs!!!

Yea the basement is super decrepit haha, and we are definitely lower than the road, just inviting all of the water to come and play with our house :) :) Thanks so much for writing me Cognoscere! xoxo

OMG that tree fort is incredible. Did you and the boys build it or was it already there when you moved in?

We have this flooding problem with our garage. That's why we just keep our old Volvo in there. The interior stays dry but the undercarriage will probably rust out soon. We should probably sell it for parts. Fortunately we can siphon out the water, no pump necessary. But there's just as much swearing.

I get so excited every time I see your hot buns. Oh boy I hope @hendrix22 can forgive me!

Bwa hahahhaaa he's got a pretty good sense of humor, so forgiveness is likely :) Brendan built the treehouse :) :)

And yes, you should sell that volvo while it still has parts. And siphoning dirty garage water, that's next LEVEL!!

Three cheers for the shop vac! My lungs weren't up to that level of suckage.

I'll say it again - you've got some lucky kids with a great poppa!

Ooh hahahaha shop vac...now that just takes all the fun out of it!

This rain...ugh! I prefer to have snow! At least it's pretty. I dread sinking up to my ankles in mud as I go out to collect eggs and tend to the chickens. What a chore having to deal with that flooded basement ☹️.At least the evening cleared up for you...not on this side of the rock! Now the deep freeze will be returning. Lovely buns!

Ooh you guys got the rain too? Damn....sorry you had to go swimming yesterday just to get the eggs!

We've got new flooding to go with the puddles in the basement... F ing chimney leak! That we didn't know about for who knows how long. Long enough for mold and rotten wooden beams. These old houses... I tell yeh. We should just go live in the ocean.

Omg noooo!! Not the chimney....faaaaaak!! Just one thing after the other up there hey, ... :( How is the bathroom reno going now?

The bathroom is as done as its getting for some time, haha. Actually we have to recaulk the recaulked caulking with different caulk still, that has to happen.
But it's all okay. Just another of lifes "here you go, stay on your toes"s.
And while the quick cement stuff is holding up pretty good in most places, of course there's still leaking and new leak spots in the basement.
These old houses. I'm glad you guys are building eventually, you can make it so water and mold proof..! Fuck that shit. Stay outside.

Yeah, I don't think we should buy an existing house in NS...they're all so fucked! The weather here is not kind to houses... Sorry to hear about that caulk, I remember you telling me about it now... :( :(

keep your shirt on girlie. we had leaks in all 3 previous houses that needed fixing. In fact the one in Pickering used to leak down the inside of the bedroom window..drip drip drip. plus we had several areas. i wont go on about all the other homes with leaks. homes are work, new or old. its part of the equation. ya know

Yeah but at least when we build our home it will be all new messes, not moving into someone elses secret mold everywhere!

yes.. none of the aforementioned homes was new...new is exciting for sure...and make sure it has a puddle barometer

Oh man that bread looks yum! I'm hungry so that might be why I'm drooling.

Dab baby, dab!

:) Drool baby Drool :) :) I wish I could share some with you!!!! Hugs, Sis!!

Used to have to wear rubber boots in my dirt basement when first moving in over 30 years ago. Now that the willow in the backyard is taller that my house the basement is as dry as a bone. Bringing you a cutting of the willow on my Hackett's Cove camping tour. 😎

you are one funny haligonian

That would be so lovely, and willow trees are just beautiful...thank you so much @novacadian!!

Hey lyndsay !! I’m sorry to hear about your basement :/ that blows .. glad you stuck to your word of telling us about this haha .. #chickenbitchesforlife
Hey I wanted to tell you to check out my two latest posts! I went hiking with my dad and made a video and then the one before that I covered a song by brand new that I think you’d like :)!

Cool Steven!

Wow, flooding basements are such an alien concept to me out here in the desert. But you and your man make a great team! Hot mess on a cold day keeps hearts warm <3 Hope the storms spare you some of their ferociousness.

Chickens never fail to soothe. And wait a minute here, you have a tree fort? The envy is real ;)

Yes, my husband @hendrix22 made the fort, to tell you the truth, even I'm scared to go up in it hahaha, I don't fit too well in that tiny staircase. <3 <3

Ahhh no flooding is terrible! Even if it's not a lot that can't be healthy (or fun to deal with). My apartment has flooded twice, and I'm on the second floor! Once the inlet to the toilet spontaneously broke when I was in bed, and once a pipe burst two stories up and it was raining in my bathroom and entrance. I totally understand @hendrix22 swearing. I would be, too.

Omg that would be way worse!! Terrible, wrecking the whole apartment, I can't believe you were chuckling about it oh wow...!!!

After you've sat on the toilet holding an umbrella over your head, what else is there to do? LOL

BWA HAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!!!!!!! YASSSSS@!!!!!!!! That's a great mental image hahahahaa thank you!

😂 True story, nature called. Now that I've made you laugh, my work here is done. °flies off°

you guys have everything under control!! great job Brendan and Lyndsay!! :)) <3

HAHA thank you for always supporting us Davood! xo

Damn! We had a basement that used to flood a lot when I was a kid, no fun for anyone this time of year- but at least you got some baking done and a pretty unset out of it! Hope the ladies are settled down from the winds... #poorbitches

AWww...#chickenbitches are #happybitches today :) :) :) Thanks for caring about our feathered family!

always! I never thought I could feel so invested in so many creature's day to day, but with all you lovely steemit homesteaders and chicken/ quail keepers I get regular updates! It's hard not to!

There is a stagnant water, I think only snow that accumulates in your place Canada. Apparently there is rain water there too. Not only the snow that descended from the sky It turned out that the rain watered the earth where you are @lyndsaybowes and family Stay. Complete All god giving for you.

Most of Canada does get snow all winter, but we live on the ocean and we are lucky to be coastal, it gives us a much warmer winter than the other places in Canada.

Your photos are really cool
Is that your son in the last picture?

Yes, it's our youngest son Stryder, he is 6 :)

In nature, everything is wisely thought out and arranged, everyone must do his own thing, and in this wisdom - the supreme justice of life.

Ummmm awesome dab there!!!
Nice buns too😉 I could totally tell there was swearing hahaha!!

Oh yes we have been there ! We have cleaned up a few floods on our Belle Fourche buildings. Love the bums fresh bread! Yum !

Hope everything is fine now. You and your family is okay? Any type of loss?
In 2010 same was happened in my area. Luckily I was at top floor but my bike was standing at lower side. Bike was damaged severely and I had some other minor losses. Overall that was a tragic moment. Most of the people lost their things.
You shared some food pictures and some other which seems everything is fine there.
All the best dear @lyndsaybowes & Stay Blessed!

There is no danger to us from the floods, it is totally okay. Nothing like what you have had to go through.

It must be such a task to clear up the space @lyndsaybowes, but at the same time climate is also getting better so something to look forward to. By the way today I am seeing some good food all over on Steemit and I am just so tempted, now it's your bread :-)
The Sunset hues pic is just so mesmerizing.

Oh dear, rough days.

Keep on pumping, keep on baking. The good times will rise again.

Now that's the right attitude Pennsif! xoxo Hugs & Love!! xoxo

😊

Oh my! I know I'm just repeating what everyone else is saying, but those buns look amazing! Jealousy creeping in now...

Hey @life-relent, thank you so much for writing me xoxo If you'd like to attempt the buns, I have the recipe here, it's my Gramma Anne's I put it on the blockchain to open source them! It's really easy to make, you got this!!

https://steemit.com/howto/@lyndsaybowes/my-gramma-anne-s-buns-make-me-so-hot

I'm bookmarking that! Not sure when I'll have the time make them though. I've never heard of adding vinegar to the mix. I've not done bread for a while, but it'll be interesting to see if this makes a difference

Hiii friend, @lyndsaybowes flood season, is it not dangerous, plz take care of you and your family as well as your chickens. Love this scene during raining, nice shot taken.

Hi @rabeel :) :) So good to see you my friend! Everything is all good now :) And frozen again haha!!

ohhhhhhhh dear @lyndsaybowes, you should take some boiled eggs with coffee. and Take care.

That water must be cold. To step in the puddle when it is freezing cold outside must be one hell of a task. No wonder you waited for @hendrix22 to clean that up :D

He really needs to get some rain boots! He soaked his work boots and had to put plastic bags on his feet to keep his socks dry for the work day lol! :) I shouldn't laugh....

may the people effected by flood live in peace, and nice to see the succulent food, i love this

The knot in the hose and the hotmess hashtag got me laughing.

I am always happy if I can make you smile and laugh David...thank you so much for letting me know :) xo

I imagine the inner speech of your husband
"why I'm putting my self in that while this lady is taking photos instead of helping me" hahahahaa lol
it looks like you had a super exciting day

Oooh yeah, he's not amused by my antics...not at all! I don't know why he married me lol!!!

The soul of mom toward chicken
you care about them even in this hard circumstances with that much love
you must be a great mom
Love this soul @lyndsaybowes

I love your Soul too my Brother!! xoxo

thank you so much sis

Oh how I would love that, to meet you one day and have lots of that to eat. That would be my own idea of heaven. Thank you ma, xoxo.

I guess it's just what you gotta deal with this time of year where you live.
But those buns gotta make life worth living :)

Oh yeah Michael, it's no sweat at all, just some more entertainment haha! :) Much Love!! xo

I want to eat it...

Basement flood season. One of the things that happens every year and lets us know spring is near.

This kinda thing would make my hear skip once I remember winter is coming just like the night watchers I'm the "Game of Thrones"..hehehe

The stress involved in moving items and cleaning up..not gonna be an easy task. Well you know better .lolzz

I love the girl dabbing in the last pix...your daughter?

It's our youngest son Stryder, he's a real cutie hey? <3 <3 <3 Winter is coming, and coming some more, we will be dealing with this for 2 more months still :) Thankfully we haven't seen any ice Dragons around because those things really freak me out!

I am sorry to see this dear sister @lundsaybowes
I hope that these disasters will be eliminated every year. I hope that everything that is corrupted will be repaired.

Thank you so much for your kind wishes Walid <3 ox

is always a mystery and has an unexpected miracle, may it not make mr. pendock got into trouble.

Thank you for understanding the psychology of Mr. Pendock. He loves you!

You are welcome

Nasty weather sure puts a stop to walkwithme time, glad I caught some awesome birds in yesterdays walk. They are calling for a week of rain here and I won't complain if it happens!

I hope you get all that you need <3 <3 I'll try and send some of this water over to you!

As long as it is just wet liquid and not that nasty white stuff or ice!!!! I am loving temps in the 80's...

Stryder ... Once he's handsome. appears to be facing an unfavourable natural conditions Yes. take care health @lyndsaybowes. in indonesia we are thankful tidk experienced weather like that

It is a dance move called 'the dab'. :) It's been years and the kids are still doing it haha! It never gets old.

May the water recede quickly, and can enjoy the beauty again in the spring with your family. Good story @lyndsaybowes

poor @ hendrix22 does not win one, fight with the hose at the end who won the fight? hendrix or the hose ha ha ha.
this spring they will have a lot of work with the basement and the floods

Hendrix won! :) I know, you are just as proud of him as I am :) :) :) He kicked that hose's ass.

ha ha ha I thought I had called reinforcement as seen by suffering with the hose, good willpower is stronger than that hateful hose ..
supporting @hendrix22

Melting snow will make the water level rise causing flooding.
Great pictures are your home in the middle of the forest

NOthing more frustrating than a flooded basement. We had a house that flooded. I would get so angry every time.

Yeah, the only saving grace is that we have nothing down there that can be harmed. I could only imagine if it was a good basement, how upsetting it would be!

nice atmosphere to enjoy family bread, @lyndsaybowes thank you for sharing, success is always for you

20180206_081619.png

it seems jordan still shy, lol ,, may the flood there @lyndysaybowes quickly passed.

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Much much better floods eh, not exactly a good thing but lol. I had a basement that flooded, I fixed it by putting sandbags where it was coming in. Thankfully because I had bearded dragons I had a bunch of sand on hand!

Omg that's pretty genius...I'll have to see if that would work here!! Thanks @wisewoof!

I am wondering why they didn't put the house foundation higher in the beginning so nobody has to deal with the flooding issue. By the way, nice buns. They look so delicious :-)'

His style is very funny. but he was much embarrassed.

but I want to see his cute face.
Hehehehe
image

He is not embarrassed, he is doing a dance called "the dab" lol! :) :)

He is so cute though...meet Stryder :)

aww... my little salty dog Strydee
