The Protector - An Original Short Story by K H Simmons

'What is it?' she asked, gaping at the corner of the room like there was nothing there.

I growled at it as the demon slithered through the wall. Tendrils of darkness reached through the nether to try and invade our realm. It froze as it locked eyes with me. There was nothing but hatred in those eyes. I snarled and bared my teeth at it. Months of destroying teddy bears had prepared me for the likes of this beast.

'There's nothing there!' Sheila said with an exasperated sigh before turning back to her picture box.

The demon crept closer, tasting the air with a pointed black tongue.

I snapped at it.

'Poppy!' Sheila cried, ungrateful as ever. She ushered me out the way so I wouldn't block the view of the picture box. Honestly if it weren't for me, Sheila would have been dragged to hell a long time ago.

The demon was getting brave as it protruded from the corner of the wall. I barked at it, teeth flashing. As ungrateful as Sheila could be, I could not let the demon take her. She was my human and it was my sworn and sacred duty to protect her. The demon retreated in fear as I barked at it. That's right, slither back into the Other realm, I thought as it disappeared.

'Do you need to go out?' Sheila asked, getting up and crossing to the back door.

No Sheila, I do not need to go out, I need you to realise that I just saved your life. But no, she sighs again and sits back down on the sofa. I checked the perimeter of the room, sniffing for signs of other demons. When I find none I jump up onto the sofa and curl up against Sheila. She smiles and places a soft hand upon my back.

I sigh. I know it's not her fault. If they could see the demons they wouldn't need us. As difficult as it was sometimes, this is what we do. I can't complain though, the job has its perks, I think as I stretch out on my back and Sheila obligingly tickles my tummy. We were safe for another night thanks to me.

This particular one is a short but sweet story I wrote for a bit of fun! I love dogs and I'm fascinated by the things they do everyday. Whether protecting us from unseen demons is one of those things remains to be seen :D

I frequently post short stories on my Facebook page www.facebook.com/katysimmonsauthor, as well as work on full length novels. If you want more short stories like the above - check out my anthology Death, Demons & Dystopia available on Amazon/Kindle. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07YN5DY98

When I'm not writing, I can usually be found cuddling dogs, reading, at the gym or playing video games.
