Transfer of Abu Simbel

in story •  7 years ago

After the revolution of 1952, work began on the design of a second dam on the Nile River, near Aswan.
Located on the banks of the Nile, the temples were threatened by flooding with the waters of the Nasser reservoir. This would lead to the destruction of the building made of sandstone.
In 1959, a campaign began to save the historical heritage. According to one of the ideas, it was necessary to transfer the monuments to a safer place, on the other leave them in place.

UNESCO convened a special commission on this issue, which included the Director-General of UNESCO, the head of the advisory committee and three experts. They supported the Swedish-Egyptian project, in which it was planned to cut the shrines into large parts weighing up to 30 tons, move them to another place and reconstruct them.

Thanks to international support, the ruins of the temples managed to be saved by moving to a new place - a rock near the old Nile river bed at 180 m from the original location of the temple
