Let me share to #steemit community and to my fellow #steemians a bit light and humorous story.

The story that I am going to tell popped out in my mind when I was trying to compose a new poem but unfortunately, I ran out of words and ideas along the way. I decided to write an anecdote instead, so here we go:

When I was in grade school, my mother implemented a house rule for my sister and I in which we have to wake up early morning at 5:00 AM during school days or weekdays so we can prepare for ourselves a breakfast before going to school.

Our home that time was a typical Filipino house made of nipa and bamboo. It was a two-storey house where in the sala, kitchen and dining areas are at the ground floor while the upper floor served as our bedroom. A six-step bamboo ladder joins both floors so that we can go up or down as we like.

During those days, my mother was sick so it was her habit to bring beside her bed a hot water placed in vacuum flask with a famous brand of "THERMOS". Her illness makes her feel like she has a butterfly in her stomach during the wee hours so she has to drink a warm water to ease the uncomfortable feeling and hopefully she could go back to sleep after drinking it.

I always knew that my mother takes good care of every single household utensils, accessories, tools, and appliances specially the breakable ones like plates and cups made of porcelain like material, and also with breakable glasses. (Hmm...Does your mother has the same principle with my mom too?)

I even remember that she was always scolding me every time I sit at the bottom of her "Singer" brand manual sewing machine. I usually ride at the see-saw like metal plate to run the said machine, while grabbing with my both hands the wheel-like metal in which a rubber thick , round thread is place around it to make the machine works as it is. Everytime I was there sitting, I always imagine that I am driving a car and was racing with other cars or chasing some robbers just like in typical Filipino movies.

Going back to the main story, I was tasked on a Sunday night to refill the vacuum flask with hot water to be brought upstairs before going to bed. I was the one who also brought it at the upper floor.

On the early morning of Monday, my mother woke me up at around 4:45AM. I was too lazy to get up from my bed because my first reason for it is caused by my "Monday sickness" of being lazy going to school every first day of the school week. The second reason is that, my mother told me to wake up because it is "5:00AM" but when I stared at the wall clock, it was only 4:45AM! Funny isn't it? So, I play dumb and did not rise up.

A few more minutes had passed, my mother woke me up again, and said that I will be late for school if I will not get up because she said that it was already past 5:00AM! I stared at the clock again with one eye opened and it was just exactly 5:00AM! I was really in disbelief that time; nevertheless, I got up from my bed, and fixed my pillows and blanket.

I was still sleepy but I heard my mother telling me to bring along with me the vacuum flask as soon as I go down. I followed her instruction, and grab the said appliance with my right hand.

My mind was still floating in sleepiness when I decided to go down. As I was trying to step my right foot at the bamboo ladder, I miscalculated the distance of the bamboo ladder causing me to slip out and boom! A loud crashing noise was heard all over the house all the way down to the ground!

It was me who just fell down from the upper floor, lying flat to the ground but still raising my right hand as high as I can while holding the vacuum flask. (Poor me isn't it?)

Anyway, we will back track a little bit. What was funny there, was my position when my back touched the ground. I was like "Captain Barbel" who was lifting a 4-kilo weights at my right hand and raising it as if I will transform into a superhero mode! Hahaha! My hand was shaking but I held it as long as I can . Oh wait, did I say that the vacuum flask is like 4- kilo weights? Well I guess that became the actual weight of the vacuum flask after I felt from the ladder.

The reason why I held that thing in my hand firmly, never allowing it to touch the ground
is that during the time that falling down is inevitable, I recalled in my mind that I have to protect that little thing in my hand no matter what happen because I am holding, so far, the most valuable kitchen appliance of MY MOTHER! I am pretty sure that she will get angry with me if it will end up damaged so instead of throwing it away to save myself from crushing down completely, I made a very quick decision to protect the most important thermos without any hesitation and without even thinking that I would end up hurting myself.

Meanwhile, when I was lying down on the ground, still with the same position, I felt that. I cannot move my body maybe because of adrenaline rush that quickly faded away. Right after the loud noise, I saw my mother staring at me from the upper ladder and asked me what happened. I saw her face having some mix expression trying to discern what really happened and suddenly I saw her starting to get pity on me.

My father also rushed down to help me get up and grabbed the vacuum flask from my hand. My mother who was still in a shock with the situation hurriedly went down and helped me. She also checked the said appliance and fortunately it was still in good condition.

Well, my mother did not scold me. She only said that I will be more careful next time. She also told me some few words of "mother's quote" for me being foolish not to throw the vacuum flask to save myself but applauded me for being brave enough to protect it.

And the prize for being foolish but turning like a superhero?

Nah, nothing really; just being late at school on purpose while having a never felt before body pain all day long! hahaha!
