In Crete, taken over 27 years of bloody battles and given more than 50,000 martyrs in return, exactly 200 years later, rebellions began in the wake of the winter rains of the Greeks and the western states. Indeed, the Greek Cypriots declared on 2 September 1866 that they annexed the island to Greece. The Ottoman government immediately sent military troops to the island to suppress this rebellion.
