The wondrour Ranakpur temple - rajastan

in story •  7 years ago

The 15th century Ranakpur jain temple in rajsatan is a stellar example of Jain architecture — exquisite, stunning and intricate. Though the Taj Mahal is widely known as India's marble wonder, the marble sun temple of Ranakpur is certainly no less in its beauty.

these temples form one of the five major pilgrimages of the Jains. The temples are in milk-white marble, covered in intricate, knotted carving.

The temple is designed as a chaumukha,

It is said there are about 1444 pillars in the temple.

Each of these pillars are intricately carved, and are said to change colour according the time of the day, and the angle of the sun's rays.

There is one beautifully carved elephant

The chaumukha temple is formed like a Nalinigulm Vimana or heavenly aircraft

It's carved on a single block of marble, with 108 snake heads and numerous tails. The interesting features of this carving is that the tails of the snakes are not visible

Intricately carved in layers that give a 3D effect of a flower and a wheel with 12 spokes on an average

the temple is that it was also nominated among the top 77 wonders while deciding for new Seven Wonders of the World.
