trump is not remaking the country in his own image. He riding what ugliness there is in the American psyche for his own cynical ends and to his own benefit. Were he to vanish tomorrow, the sickness wouldn't, because it predates him, and lives under the skin of too many of us. He just helped it to the surface.
We can't say "Oh, once trump is out of office, we'll all be happy and loving and decent" because we weren't that way to start with. Many of us weren't, anyway. They were just pretending to be decent.
