WHEN THEY CAME

When they came, they said it was necessary, that the virus would kill us unless we took the vaccine. They said the vaccine would protect us from the coming plague. Then they started giving it to the weak, those who couldnt fight, those who were too sick to resist and those who were scared than common sense would allow.

These men, men who wore camous the color of death itself, men whose voices sounded like wails at a funeral suddenly bacame our saviors. One by one the weak became strong and the sick began to get better. Soon everyone was clamouring for the vaccine. People lined up infront of their make shift base for the so called cure. You go in crying this moment and then the next moment you are beaming with smile, the tear filled eyes of your mum greeting you, welcoming you back to life cos you were all but gone. That was the situation then.

Someone use to say there are two kind of chaos, the one that came from death and the one that came from hope. There was chaos everywhere but hope rubbed on our faces like a forgiving mother.

But there were still some of us who refused to take the vaccines, some who saw the madness in that blue liquid, who knew that something was fishy. They called us the rebels, we called ourselves the survivors. We are not so sure anymore what we are.

“Lets just take the goddamn vaccine” David said.

He was panting. He and a group of survivors had just come from a run for supplies, supplies that we now steal from humans who had become vegetables.

You see, this is what the vaccines do to those who took it. It turned them to semi zombies, while you get better, you slowly begin to loose the will to fight, the will to protect whats yours.

David and his group had encountered them, a group of soldiers on a mission to make sure we either took the vaccine or we are all dead.

“I am tired of running and hiding or be shot in the head by these goddamn soldiers” David repeated.

“Did you lose them?” I said. “Did you fucking lose them?”

“We did, we lost them at the river two miles from here, doubled back to the hospital before we covered our tracks and got back here”

I believe him. If there was someone that could hide well, it was David. He is one of the reasons we've made it this far.....,

I looked out the window from the building we were hiding in, the sun had just begun to set and i couldn't help but remember when everything wasn't so gloomy, when sunset was still a drop of honey dripping from our lips and the buildings held hopes and dreams and aspirations.

Now, they seem like shadows and demons, a bitter reminder that we were once a civilized race.

I looked at the people around me and i realized that this people count on me to see them through this trying times. But something caught my attention...,

From the window i could see movements, some group of soldiers..., they must have followed David.

"I thought you said you lost them" I growled at David.

"I did" David replied.

"Then can you please explain why there are soldiers outside?"

The sound of gunshot slit through the air before he had a chance to reply..,

"Caleb, take the kids to the bunkers, Jude, Gather every one who can handle a gun, today we fight or we die but we are not taking that vaccine" I said as my adrenaline started to kick in

But something stopped me in mid breath.

David was pointing his gun at me..,

"No we are not fighting" he said.

"I made a deal with them, we are taking the vaccine whether you like it or not, so you should surrender"
