Chapter 3
He watched her car vanish into the thin air. He walked inside the house and went to his bedroom. He had a bath and wore some casual clothes. Descended the stairs and made for the kitchen. To his amazement, there was no food for him.
"Why would this woman not keep my food?" He thought out loud
He got his car keys and left the house. Drove himself to an eatery and ate to his satisfaction. He went back home to wait for Harriet's return.
By late afternoon, the kids were back home with their mother. He waited for her to come to the
room.
"Why didn't you keep my food?" He asked as she walked in.
She ignored him and went to use the bathroom. She emerged after some minutes and changed into a lighter dress.
"I asked you a question" he continued
"I didn't include you when I was preparing the food" she answered
"I'm hungry. What's for lunch?"
"Nothing. The girls and I ate in an eatery on our way home"
"I'm hungry"
"Ther are two packs of noodles in the kitchen. The left side of the down cupboard. Prepare it and eat. I've got work to do"
And with that, she walked out of the room. She didn't understand why he would complain that there was no food yet he didn't give money for the food. She went to the garden and sat down to work on her laptop. Thoughts of her lunch time with Peterson creeped into her thoughts. He had picked her from the office and gave her a good treat. He was looking handsome as always. And this time, he wore another cologne. They had such a great time together that she was so sad when he dropped her off at the office. She smiled and started working. She was gonna text him later in the day to say thank you.

It was a week to her birthday and her husband was still behaving very funny. He had told her that he was going to be away on her birthday. She ignored him totally. She didn't care again. She informed Peterson of her birthday and he promised to see to it. And in the middle of one breezy evening, he paid her a visit.
"How did you find my house?" She asked him
"Let's say I wanted to surprise you" he replied
"Funny. Very, very funny. If it were another person, I would have walked him out. But, you are no random person. You are welcome to my humble abode. Please sit down"
"Thank you very much"
"I've got juice, brandy, whisky and wine. Which should I offer you?"
"Whisky will be just fine"
"Okay. Give me a second"
"Take forever, love"
She went to the wine bar and got a bottle of whisky and two glasses. He poured a shot for him and for herself.
"Where are your children?" He asked as he lifted the glass to his lips.
"They are doing fine. You want to see them?"
"Yeah"
"Nadine, Nadia. Could you girls hurry down here " she called out
And in a few minutes, both girls appeared before them.
"Nadine, Nadia meet Mr. Peterson. He is my very good friend"
"Good evening sir" Nadine said with a smile
"Good evening uncle" Nadia greeted
"Good evening beautiful girls. But I'd preferred to be called Uncle Peter "
The girls nodded their heads in affirmation. They were about leaving when he spoke out again

"Wait a minute"
He dipped his hand into his pocket and brought out a bundle of naira notes. He gave it to Nadine who received it with both hands.
"That's for your snacks. I don't know how much it is. But if isn't enough get my phone number from your mum and call me" he added
"Thank you Uncle Peter" both girls said.
Nadine handed the money to her mum and both of them left the sitting room.
"Peterson, you didn't have to do that" Harriet said
"Your children are my children. I don't love them less. So please, don't blame me for my benevolence"
He was such a sweet person and he knew how to treat people right
"Thank you"
"Oh come on, it's nothing. Where is your husband?"
"He's not back. I don't know if he will even come back"
He felt the hurt in those words. He could see the tears welling up in her brown eyes. He knew he had asked a good question but at a wrong time.
"I didn't mean to hurt you, Harry"
"It's alright Peterson. I'm gonna be fine"
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah"
He emptied his glass of whiskey into his mouth. Thanked her for her warm reception and begged to take his leave. She walked him to his car and watched him drive out. She retired to her room and counted the money. It was a hundred thousand naira. She wasn't expecting that amount. He had given enough for the weekend.
"Mum, is Uncle Peterson your colleague at work?" Nadine asked at dinner another day
"No. Not at all. He's just a friend" she replied. She wasn't expecting the question.
"A friend that admires mummy right?" Nadia added and looked at her
"Let's say he likes mummy a lot. And he likes both of you too" she replied. She felt the room closing in on her. She wasn't going to let them know she likes him too. That isn't the perfect word tho. She loves him. More than their father
