Outside his cell, Mox could hear the constant knocking. The people of the town were working relentlessly on making the gallows. It’s been a day since the trial ended. He was now all alone in his cell. Having nothing else to do, he was reading a book that the sheriff gave it to him.
The door of his cell opened, disturbing Mox’s reading. Captain James entered the room, having a pleased look on his face.
“What do you want, James Neyhart?” Mox growled at him. He was reading a really nice book and didn't want to be bothered in his last days.
“Could you, please, not say my name as an insult?” James face twitched a little bit.
“Can’t help it. Habit. I’m used to use the Neyhart name as a curse. What do you want?” Mox answered in a cold way.
James didn’t say a thing this time and handed him a piece of paper. Mox took the paper and started to read. As he was reading, his eyes became wider and wider.
“Dear Mox,
I want to thank you. Thank you for being such a good friend. The last couple of days were harsh for all of us. I blamed you for our failure. We got used with success and at the first failure, everything fell on your shoulders.
When the Silver Guards caught us and started to beat us every day, I blamed everything on you. I hated you. I lost my trust in you. But, I never expected your actions in the courtroom. I have never seen someone so selfless in the face of death. And I’ve seen many things in my life.
I’m not sure how you do it, but we are now free. Captain James told us that you made a deal with him. Again, you saved our lives. Everyone will take their way and leave this place. I’m not sure where I’ll go, but I hope that you will manage to survive as well. I know that you have some kind of plan.
I hope that we will see again someday.
Your friend for life,
Bass”
Mox took his eyes from the paper and looked at James that was following his every reaction.
“How? Why? Is this for real?” Mox couldn’t find his words after reading the paper.
“It’s as real as it can get. Didn’t I tell you that I want to work with you? We’ve started in our relationship on the wrong foot, but I’m trying to be on your side this time. Now tell me more about that painting that you were looking for.” James hastily said.
“You forget one thing. I told you on that day, I want to walk free as well. Only then I will tell you more about it. You can’t fool me that easy, James Neyhart.” Mox answered, putting the paper aside.
“That is harder that you think. At least you can tell me something. A hint. Anything.”
“No. This paper can be a fake. I don’t trust you. Firstly, because you’re a Neyhart. Secondly, let’s not forget who order his men to do their thing on me.” saying this Mox lifted his shirt, revealing the nasty scars he had.
“I’ll see what I can do!” James said leaving the room.
Mox returned to his book, listening to the music of the hammers that were making his gallows. Unless a miracle will happen, tomorrow he will hang.

I want to go when I want. It is tasteless to prolong life artificially. I have done my share; it is time to go. I will do it elegantly.
