Jimmy Carter, thirty ninth President of the United States, was known to be a close man and, above all, folksy, certain trusts was taken with those he had treated, including those who finished to meet or skipping the strictest protocols.

Many were those who blamed the affable and informal Carter to their origin, since despite having inherited the major agricultural company from his father (grown peanuts and cotton in the southern state of Georgia, being popularly known as the 'King of peanuts') spent much of his childhood and youth in a totally rural environment.

Among the many anecdotes (and bloopers) who starred it is that took place in his first posting as president when he traveled to the United Kingdom between 5 and 10 May 1977 to attend a summit of heads of state of the G- 7, and an important NATO meeting.

Taking advantage of the trip was invited by the British Royal Family to a reception held at Buckingham Palace and the other leaders they were also. When US President arrived at the palace was taken to the room where the royal family (the Queen Mother, Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II) was receiving guests and, as he saw them, Carter rushed to the Queen Mother and he kissed her on the lips. This, keeping the strict protocol and composure, just took a step back, but it was not fast enough to avoid coming into contact lips. He was petrified by the gesture of confidence that had taken the guest, who had behaved as if in their southern land was found.

However the reception had to continue as if nothing had happened but, although not known whether it was for this reason, while Jimmy Carter was US president never again be never invited more to travel to the UK.

Later the Queen Mother wrote about this unpleasant event and explain that this was the first time anyone had kissed him on the lips since widowed in 1952 of her husband, King George VI.

Also noteworthy is that the Queen Mother was not the only one of the 'victims' of that peculiar way that Carter had to say hello, doing the same to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis also or Bette Davis.
