Ever since I was a kid I was a night owl!
At first, it was reading. I spent nights reading books, I often went to bed at 4-5am because I was reading… I read books that ranged from fantasy to sci-fi, I read the whole Spiderwick chronicles before they made the movie.
After that it was games! Me, my brother and my father were huge game addicts, we spent hours each night playing all sorts of games, we played Age of Empires 2 and 3, we played Age of Mythology, we played Civilization 4 and 5, we played Gears of War, we played Magic The gathering, we played so many games! I often fell asleep on my computer because I was playing with one of them.
My mother was the one that suffered. While we were playing she was trying to sleep, and we were really loud gamers! Our screams at 3 am from one room to the other asking for “gold” or for “food” always woke her up, and let me tell you guys, you don’t want to wake up my mother in the middle of the night.
When I wasn’t playing games I was either watching TV shows or movies, and what better time to watch them than at night time! Avatar, Angel, Bones, Friends, Big Bang Theory, How I met your mother, Seinfeld, Fringe, Matrix, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and the list goes on and on and on …
When I finally had 14 years my parents let me go out into the wild wild world that is nightlife, and OH BOY DID I ENJOY THAT LIFE! At first, I had a curfew at 3 am, after 2-3 months that curfew was extended to 5 am and soon enough I had no curfew. It’s impossible for me to count all the nights I went out to party (some of them are literally impossible to remember, alcohol you know…), I started at 16 and “stopped” at 21, almost every single weekend I was out partying, even when I had exams I always went out to the local club. When I was 18 I put 1-2 euros in the piggy bank every time I went out, at the end of the year I had 300 bucks… and I was a heavy drinker, so I don’t even want to think about the amount of money I wasted on alcohol…
I started my gym life at 21, the same time I “quitted” alcohol ( only drink it once or twice a year), if you guys ever went to the gym you must know how tired a person is after working out...
After my workouts, I always get home, make dinner, eat and my body goes into full shutdown mode, I’m not able to do any sort of work, and so, I’m not able to study either…
Not being able to study in college is a no-no for me, college is 100 times harder than high-school, damn I didn’t even study in high-school, just what I learned from the class was enough, but in college one class has the same amount of content that 1 whole year of high school classes have.
So, if I had to study and I couldn’t do it after my night workout what could I do?
The only option I had was to stop being a night owl, be an early rise and study during the morning. And so I did it, and I found this “secret” little trick that wakes me up almost every morning at 7-8am without me doing anything, no alarm clock nothing… That trick is Sunlight!
I stopped shutting the blinds of my bedroom's window!
Every morning I wake up like our ancestors woke up before alarm clocks were invented, I wake up with Helios the GOD OF SUN shining through my window! That’s usually at 7 am, sometimes 8 am.
Another thing I do was start going to bed earlier and stop using the computer at least 1-2 hours before bed.
You must be wondering why this is better than setting the damn alarm clock… Well, that’s because there is a little thing called the Circadian Rhythm…
Circadian Rhythm basically regulates your sleep schedule, he does this through many ways, one of them is that, at night, it detects that there is no light (unless we are sitting on our laptops) and makes us produce melatonin, which is the sleep hormone that induces sleep, and during the morning it wakes us up when it detects sunlight (unless we have the blinders shut and no sunlight gets in)…
Just changing these 2 things has made wonders for my night owl behaviors, I’ve woke up at 7-8am for the past 2 weeks without even setting my alarm clock!!
Now, I can only do this because there is no street light on my bedroom’s side of the house, there are some people that can’t do this because of street lights, but we live in 2018 you know…
If for some reason you can’t do this and you 100% need to sleep with the blinds shut than you can buy a sunlight alarm clock that actually increases the light in your room for 1 hour before the set time, and, as plan B, it also comes with an alarm clock for the times when you don’t wake up!

Question of the day: Are you a night owl or not? What sort of behaviors lead up to you being a night owl?

hereditary insomnia? I didn't even know that was a thing... I guess my four-legged patients don't have insomnia, so that's why i don't know much about the issue xD the only time i had something similar to insomnia was after a breakup... I couldn't sleep for more than 3 hours a night before my dreams woke me up, and when i woke up i couldn't fall asleep because my brain was overthinking everything

You led quite the eventful childhood and young adult life. I don't have a guess as to how much money you spent on drinks, but I can imagine it was a lot. I had coworkers that would spend $100-$150/ weekend just on drinks.
I don't tend to stay up too late. I always have tended to like to go to bed earlier because I have a harder time sleeping if I go to bed late.

Well... my normal nights ranged from 20-50 euros, back than a beer was like 0.5 to 1 euro and whisky was like 3 euros
It's midnight right now and i'm already getting sleepy xD i installed a program called flux that makes it so the pc monitor actually regulates my circadian rhythm it's amazing!

So even if you drank the shots of whiskey, you're saying that you would drink 17 shots of whiskey in a night... before you were even 21?
Flux sounds fun. I'm going to look it up now!

ahahah, easily actually... when i was 18 i drunk a whole bottle of absinthe by myself, but i was pretty heavy back then, i weighted 264lbs! When i joined college i had 4 senior students trying to get me drunk, 2 of them quitted and the other 2 got wasted halfway :P
I can't do that anymore, i now drink only twice a year at most, my liver enzymes have decreased so it takes quite some time for my liver to metabolize alcohol... last time i drunk it was actually pretty bad, the night went okeyish but the day after my stomach decided to have a revolution!

0.5 euros for a beer? Bloody hell that's cheap hahahaha, you can pay upwards of £5 for a pint here, depending on where you go

I have always been a night owl, I don't know why, but I am. I'd be able to stay up to the wee small hours and get up early an continue on.
I've never been a gamer, although when the wife and I bought our boys their first "gaming" system, an Atarai, after they went to bed, we'd stay up till 4 in the moring playing Asteriods! Then I'd get up at 7 and go to work... I'm lucky, I have a built in alarm clock, it goes off every morning at 6am... I'm 60, it's soon time to get rid of the built in alarm clock!

Playing until 4 am, i know the feeling xD i have something similar to that alarm clock, the problem is that, if my eyes don't see any morning light i just go back to sleep again :P
My grandfather is 80 and he still wakes up every morning at 7 am to shave , so, you still have some years in front of you with that alarm clock

I always switch between night owl and early riser as I need it right now.
As soon as university starts up again (and yes, it's 1000 times heavier
I usually wake up around 7-8 and go early to bed. But at exams time I switch into nightowl-mode and learn at night and sleep until 10-11.
Works both for me, but I prefer the Nightowl because sometimes I go out with friends and come back home late and that destroys my plans to stand up early. So my rythm is better when being a nightowl.

Yeah, i normally studied at night time too but i changed that now, my body goes into full shutdown mode after my workouts, damn, it was a pain in my ass to format this post yesterday after working out, everything was aching and my eyes kept shutting, so morning studying is much better for me i think, let's see how it goes...

I can not call myself one of them, staying awake for the whole night is something I can not do. I can only remember of doing that 3-4 time in my whole life. But there is something for which I can stay awake is Games (Play station) but certainly not the novels and books movies and all.

Yeah, I sometimes fall asleep when I'm watching movies or reading books until too late, but games can keep me up for hours, sometimes even games, when i was an addicted gamer I sometimes played for 2 whole days straight, no stops! I was a dumbass back then, my health deteriorated quite a lot!

3am curfew at the age of 14???? I wouldn't have been allowed out past dark around here nevermind that late hahahaha. Not that I cared anyway, I didn't start going out till 18, just played games till them.
I'm the same I'm such a night owl, I've realised I'm quite sensitive to light too so I've got f.lux on my computer to get rid of the blue light when the sun sets.
I used to work night shifts one summer, 11pm-9am, by the time I was home it was like 10:20am. It was a killer haha, but I had to invest in getting a sleeping mask as the light during the day was affecting my sleep. Crazy how much our bodies are affected by light like that.

I live in a really small city, so, we all knew each other, we have like 4 different high schools so i knew almost everybody that was going out... The legal age of drinking was, back then, 16 years, guess i was drinking illegally xD
I also have f.lux installed, it's amazing that light affects us soo much! There is another thing that also affects me, different light bulbs have different color specters, there are some that we don't even realize but is emiting a lot of blue light, our brain detects that subconsciously and wakes us up

I had to read because of the owl picture. I love owls, awesome creatures. It Sounds like you have getting a good night sleep down to a fine art. I have never really been a night person, or a morning person for that matter either.

Not a night person or a morning person? that only leaves afternoon person xD
I love being healthy and sleep is a huge part of it, 8 hours or more is the recommended, not only to flush out the toxic products that accumulate during the day in our brains but also for normal hormone balance. Unbalanced hormones can have serious side effects such as depression, loss of muscle mass, mood swings, infertility, etc...
Owls are really cool, and i love them even more because they are one of the symbols associated with knowledge and Brain Power!

Thanks for reading and for the upvote @humanearl! I learned English in a cambridge academy, my problem is that i stopped speaking and writing in english for 3 or 4 years so i still have some problems here and there.. my main problems right now is when to use then and than, i always get them confused xD
What gave me the idea to do this post was actually talking to Philip about this issue :D I guess nowadays with the amount of light we get from our TV screens, monitors, etc... our circadian rhythm gets all messed up making it so every year more and more ppl have sleep problems

You are right! it is! The main problem is that, with such a busy life it's hard to find the time to actually go and sungaze, i do it many times in the summer, i like to go out to nature and run around, but during college time, with steemit also occupying most of my time it gets hard to find the time to actually do such a thing... Thanks for reading!
I went and checked your latest post, you have an amazing country! I love the snow and nature and bulgaria ( the photos are from bulgaria right?) seems to have such an amazing landscape! right now here in portugal we are going from winter to spring, i wake up every morning with the birds right outside my window singing, and i can already feel the spring-like smell in the air, a couple more weeks and i'm going out for a ride to actually take some photos, hope you stick around to see them :D
