The reason…Part 1 - The Parrot

I’m starting this new post series, where I talk about the reason why I made this 1,2 posts about dog cancer, this story is going to span all the way from my childhood straight to my adulthood, don’t know how many parts it will have, it really depends on how well my alcohol abused college mind remembers.

Ever since I was a little child I wanted a dog, I love dogs! I don’t know where I got this desire to have a dog, maybe I got it from watching the “101 Dalmatians”, maybe from “Beethoven”, maybe from “The Fox and the Hound”, or maybe it’s just in my DNA!

I still remember asking my parents for a dog, I asked them almost every single day for a dog, I wanted a dog, I wanted a friend, I wanted a brother (I already had a human one and we fought a lot). I don’t remember when I started asking them for a dog, but they might have been my first words “Mãe eu quero um cão” Translation: “Mom I want a dog”.

I think it was around the age of 10 when I finally convinced my parents to give me a dog, it’s actually a funny story, full of despair and manipulation, manipulation by me and despair by my mother!

We went to the shopping and, like any kid, I could go the game shop or the animal shop, of course I chose the animal shop! As soon as I stepped foot into the shop it was like I was entering a whole new world! I could hear the parrots talking, the dogs barking, the cats meowing, I could hear the birds singing and the aquarium bubbles popping when they reached the surface, I couldn’t, however, hear the lizards, those guys don’t make any noises!

I entered the shop one foot at a time, getting surprised every turn I made with the number of animals I was seeing, they had it all. I ran from the dogs to the hamsters, to the cats, back to the dogs and then I saw it. It was the most amazing parrot I’ve ever seen, the damn guy knew how to speak, knew how to sing, knew how to do tricks, damn, the guy knew how to do everything, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was the next ParrAlbert Einstein (you see what I did there, fusing Albert Einstein with parrot ), I was marveled with that animal.

For the next 4 days every time I went to the shopping I ran straight to that parrot, he had the most beautiful feathers! Even now, 13 years later, I still remember him! His head was white as snow, his neck red as the dawn, his feathers then went from red to a bright radioactive green for a short moment and ending in a lively blue.

Now, you should know, every time I asked my parents for a dog I always got the same answer, “No, choose another pet”, and so I did!

That night, as we drove from the shopping to our house, I told my parents that I had finally chosen another pet instead of the dog. They never came with me to the animal shop, so they didn’t know the amount of time I spent with that parrot, they thought I had chosen a hamster or even a lizard. I could see it on my father’s face, he was definitely thinking “Finally he is going shut up with all the wanting a dog talk”.

They asked: “What animal do you want?” as soon as I said the words “parrot” I could see it!
My mother got terrified, she looked straight at me scared for her life, she wasn’t able to say one single word, meanwhile, my father laughed, now you must be wondering, why?? Why is my father laughing and my mother scared? Well… I had totally forgotten that my mother was afraid of birds, Ornithophobia is what is called “the abnormal and irrational fear of birds”.

After a couple of minutes of suspense, my mother only said: “NO, ANYTHING BUT A BIRD! “. She was in full despair, they had promised me any animal that was not a dog, but now, when asked for a different animal she had to go back on that promise. I don’t know about you guys, but a parent promising something and then going back on his word is just shameful, it teaches their kid to break promises, which is not a good thing.

Now… I don’t know where I got it from, but I was a manipulative kid, I saw this opportunity and I stepped right in, I only said these words: “Ok, if not a bird, then get me a dog”, meanwhile my father kept laughing, I guess my mother wasn’t getting any support from that side on this discussion. Stuck between “getting a bird” or “getting a dog” I guess my mother had no other choice than to get me a dog…

Damn! I was a really manipulative asshole kid! Sorry mom!

Question of the day: Did you guys "manipulate" your parents into doing stuff for you when you were kids?

It was really good.

Thank you! I try my best to post good quality content on steemit :) If you liked this you can also check some of my other content if you want!

Thanks for sharing this nice story. It's always good to reflect on one's childhood memories. I remember manipulating my parents into buying me a Magnavox Odyssey video game. Explaining how it would help me in school. Haha @journerfreedom

I loved your story!! It reminds me of my own! I always wanted a dog and my mom didn't. She went for other animals like fish, but it wasn't the same. They were doing nothing! :P
Then my dad convinced her to get hamsters. We bought two, they ended up 18. She went nuts and that was when she said OK for the dog (and she loved so much that dog, more than she loved me :P )

more than she loved me

I know the feeling! xD this is a post series so i will keep continuing the story, if you had a dog you probably know how the story will end (ps- i had even worse luck than a normal person, so get ready for a ride of emotions, english is not my main language but i will try to "write my feeling")
Thanks for reading! I promise that no math will be posted in this post series xD

hahah thx for the maths! I'm looking forward to read more about it, I really enjoy your writing! :)

As an animal lover and rescuer, I can definitely relate to this story. It was very entertaining! I am looking forward to part 2.

Thank you :)! i'm sure you will love part 2 too, and part 3 and 4 and 5 i really think it will take me all year to finish this story!
Most of my posts are about animals, i'm a vet student, i mainly write about animals and vet stuff, especially stuff that people do which they shouldn't

I really can feel that you love the dogs lol and it is really good person like you are doctor of the dogs !!!

Thanks! Yes i love dogs, ever since i was a kid i wanted to be a Vet! Dogs, cows, horses, all animals actually, but dogs are always going to have a special place in my heart

I was always buying pigeons as a kid lol!! Loved pigeons!!

You mean flying rats xD? i also had pidgeons when i was a kid, they were on my grandmother's sister house, i think they were all released when she died ... I couldn't agree more, they were amazing! They were a good source of entertainment, but i think we never ate any eggs or anything of them...

Nah me too...we didn't eat them or anything!! They were just graceful!!

This manipulation might have happened to every kid-parent relation.

The bird manipulated you from dog side. By the way, did you take the Bird or the Dog from animal shop?

Second part coming up this week xD but i'm a dog fanatic so you must already know what i got 😉😉

This was a fun read. To answer your question no i did not but it is not that i did not know how to play the game it is just that I refused to play it. Partially because politics and manipulation run high in my family. Like many blue blooded families mine just has these insane dynamics more akin to warfare then a "loving" family. In the end their bad behavior formed my strict code of ethics that I implemented from a very early age.

I played the game, i lived the game, i got high level at the game :P My parents are awesome, my whole family is awesome, we are more or less tight and loving, our family dinners are the best.

In the end their bad behavior formed my strict code of ethics that I implemented from a very early age.

At least you got something out of it :)

That's how it should be I am glad for you that you have that :)
