First Bulgarian Literary Museum

The patriarch of Bulgarian literature and the national poet Ivan Vazov, as the Bulgarians themselves call him, was born on July 9, 1850 in the city of Sopot, in a house built by his great-grandfather, who burned down during the Russian-Turkish war in July 1877.

In Sofia, the house-museum of Ivan Vazov is located on the corner of G.S. Rakovski ”and“ Yves. Vazov ”, that is, in the very center of the Bulgarian capital.

Ivan Vazov lived in this house for a long time, so after his death it was decided to open a museum dedicated to his work - he became the first Bulgarian literary museum. It was in 1926.

This house was built in 1895, it has two residential floors and a courtyard with a summer kitchen, where a restaurant is now located. After visiting the museum, you can sit in this authentic restaurant. Prices for the center of Sofia are quite reasonable.

On the ground floor of the house there is a dining room and an art and documentary exposition, where museum overseers introduce visitors to the course of affairs in Russian, Bulgarian and English.

On the second floor are Ivan Vazov’s bedroom, his mother’s bedroom, living room and study.

After visiting the apartments of other Bulgarian writers, the house of Ivan Vazov seems very rich. Probably it is.

Entrance to the museum costs from 2 leva (1 euro).

The museum is open every day from 10.00 to 17.00, except Thursday. Thursday is a free day and visitors are allowed from 13.00 to 17.00. Free days are constantly changing so that visitors do not get used to it.

It does not take much time, however it is quite interesting, healthy and tasty in the end.

It is especially important for general development, because Ivan Vazov does not care for the Bulgarians that our Leo Tolstoy is in Russia.
