After lunch Pit continues to write yet another version of his presentation. I sip my coffee and observe people. The Imperial Island’s soil can be discerned on the other side of grey waters, dashed by the white crests of waves.
'Cold grey northern sea.'
'Northern to us, southern for Islanders.'
'It's relative, the same as the point of view of the Inner committee.'
'In what sense?'
'What we call the ocean they call the sea,' says Pit vaguely.

What he probably wanted to say is that the Central Committee is a core that brings together a defined number of the rich and powerful, virtuously decorated by high social status and quality-packed bank accounts. The core makes decisions and other members do the work, according to their abilities and merits.
Beforehand agreements and joint decisions help avoid situations where members act against one another, not knowing whether they are sitting on opposing sides of the negotiating table or on some other side, behind a mask of some company that possibly hides Organization's members.

Over the past few years, I have made considerable strides within the organization's ranks, and am inches away from being invited onto the Committee. True, I am still not old enough, but neither am I hurrying to park myself in an armchair. That would separate me from fieldwork, from the world and from life, uniting me in a life-long romance with chin-high stacks of paperwork.
