Beginning of the story:

Steemland is changed.
I feel it in the water.
I feel it in the earth.
I smell it in the air .
Much that once was is lost;
For none now live who remember it.

It began when the Steemland Founders left their country,
To give citizens opportunity to rule on their own.
But the power was seized by servants of "Big Sam" order
Intended to enslave Steemland citizens
Lucas and Victoria, Descendants of the founders
Were secretly sent by Resistance leaders
In order to restore peace and prosperity.
So Lucas and Victoria hit the road...

The beggar suddenly chimes in.

"I once knew where some water was, but the lake was shrinking even then."

Amazed, the two realize that their kindness may pay off.

"It is only a few miles that way," the beggar continues, as he points over the horizon. "I doubt if you'll find your whale, but I can take you. Last I knew, there were only minnows there... but... given enough time, a minnow could become a whale, couldn't it?"

Create a special tag for the story/contest. Pass it to one author and let them write their part and post their chapter under their name. The person with the current chapter gets whatever earnings come. Figure a way to draw interested parties and arrange the order in which they get to write a chapter. The assumption is that later/last chapters will earn more as the following builds. Would work in a way like hidden gems or sponsored content.

Thank you, it's great idea

Its hard game for me

... being near the big tree and around nature, they had to take the time to smoke a giant joint but realized after that it will wake their paranoia considering someone was following them...

Was the figure in the distance a member of the Resistance, or was it one of "them"....
Terror seized the pair and they began to freak out.

Was this some sort of set-up? Was the figure in the distance working with the beggar that they picked up? All the questions began to run through their heads..

Victoria became dizzy in an instant. Falling to her knees, she cried out for Lucas who was walking far ahead.

"Lucas, I need you, I can't see!"

Lucas turned quickly to see his lifelong companion kneeling, her eyes appearing as eerie blue pools, gazing into the distance past him.

"Vic, what's wrong with you! What's wrong with your eyes?"

Victoria didn't hear Lucas. All of her senses had become engulfed in a singular vision. An image of an immense sea creature, massive in size but suffering greatly. Huge, tired eyes enthralled Victoria then communicated to her.

"Nimble One, I need you. Find water and you'll find me. All life in Steemland will perish unless you to rescue me."

Victoria's eyes returned to their handsome brown as she could instantly see Lucas, terrified then relieved.

"Lucas, we need to find water, any water! A mammoth of the sea is still alive! There's one still alive! A whale just spoke to me, and we have to save it."

Lucas helped Victoria to her feet, stunned at what his best friend just said.

After many hour walking the blacktop in the punishing heat, they came across a beggar, with a ragged cloak drawn tight around his face. He raised his hand to them, and on his palm they saw a sign. They knew they had to take him with them, he could be useful.

Victoria places a hand gently on the beggars rough cheek, and gazes into his sorrowful eyes as he looks up. Tears stream down his face as he shares her incredible vision. He sees what Victoria sees. He sees the whale communicating with all of Steemland by connecting all water, all beings, land air and sea. He simply needs Victoria to touch the water.

The trio turn and race towards the horizon. Though the gentle beggar has a limp, evidence that strangers have not always been so kind to him, he isn't letting it slow him down one bit.

His purpose is driving him like a madman now, and he's half galloping half running across the parched and thirsty land. Victoria and Lucas are following with great zeal and excitement.

Time is of the essence, they've got a whale to find!

They make their way, following close behind the beggar.

Victoria asks "What is your name?"

The beggar looks off into the distance as if trying to remember. "Timothy" he finally replies. "I have not heard or spoken it in a long time."

The group stops to rest. Lucas taps his forearm launching the green glow of his Holo Comm Device. Swiping away at the thin air and mist, he frantically searches for any sign of humidity.

Victoria whispers to Lucas, "This is worse than I thought. Humans are starting to forget. Forget the way things used to be. With the land and natural resources destroyed, we're losing our symbiotic relationship with Terra."

Lucas stares into Victoria's eyes and sighs, "We're old enough to remember when this place was called Earth. I know it's declared a sin to use that word, but it just feels right."

"I'm glad I had that fucking thing cut out of my arm five years ago. They'll never make me part of their sick experiment," Timothy grumbled in a gruff, distant voice.

Something certainly needs to change, and soon. With the destruction of so much that the earth once had to offer, many of the survivors are too young remember.

Victoria hasn't even seen a real flower in over 6 years. Any seeds that were saved dried past germination. Even the light rain that rarely comes anymore immediately turns to steem once it hits the surface of the dried and desperate Terra.

A small, red light begins flashing on Lucas's hologram indicating a life-form eight miles to the north and airborne. Lucas could barely see off on the horizon a dark, gliding figure slowly flapping it's menacing wings. A flying raptor, one of Big Sam's demented biological experiments gone awry. He could barely make out the creature, but appeared to be one that was cross specie of a crane and iguana.

"There! To the north, Lucas whispered to the group. We have to be quiet, but if we follow that thing, it should lead us to some water eventually", he said, turning off his Holo Comm.

Victoria reaches out a hand to help Timothy to his feet and slowly hoists the old beggar up. Grunting, Timothy says, "How about very, very quiet. The aviary have been known to rip a man to shreds out of sheer hunger. Food's been scarce for everyone, those flying demons are no exception".

Victoria and Lucas nod in agreement to Timothy's grim statement. Following the raptor means leaving the road, and it's relative safety. Darkness will soon come rendering their efforts futile. Darkness brings horrors far worse than being eaten alive by a flying lizard, a reality the three all know too well.

Luckily, the flying creature's nature was to circle constantly in search of prey on the ground. This enabled the trio to keep their distance while maintaining a brisk pace. The discouraging part was that if the raptor had known where water was, it's flight might be faster and more direct.

As they crested a sloping ridge, something they hadn't seen in many years was creeping toward them, slowly but deliberately on a massive scale. A dense bank of fog was rolling in and engulfing the entire valley that lay before them. At first, Lucas was confused when his Holo Comm triggered his alert for water, but quickly realized what this meant.

"Vic, you said the whale told you that any water would do right, Lucas asked?"

"Yes, that's what I saw in the vision", Victoria said in confusion.

"That fog is vaporized water, maybe that will do", Lucas declared as he spotted the raptor disappearing into the fog. "We better head down there"!
