When the power went out, the West Indians were surprisingly well prepared. It was just understood that every household should have candles (practical ones, not the scented kind) and matches on hand for events such as these. Even after years abroad. Even in a city that never, ever went dark.
Anybody else remember the Northeast blackout of 2003? That was literally the only time I've ever been to New York. It wasn't so bad after we figured out that it wasn't part of a terror plot or something like that. And of course, there were candles.
The random word that inspired this story was "dark".
