Stranger Things season 4 is happening! Netflix renewed the series just three months after the premiere of the third season. This isn’t a surprise. Not only does Netflix obviously want to keep the Stranger Things franchise going, but so do The Duffer Brothers and all the other folks who actually make Stranger Things. Otherwise, why keep the hopes of Jim Hopper’s survival alive and reintroduce the Demogorgon into the world? The Duffers themselves have previously stated that they had a fourth season tentatively planned.
Here is everything we know about Stranger Things season 4.
Stranger Things Season 4 Release Date
No release date has been set, and it’s hard to say when Stranger Things season 4 could premiere. The first two seasons were October affairs with season 3 taking a bit more time and eventually premiering on July 4, 2019.
A TV Line report on the number of Season 4 episodes also confirms that shooting was initially set to commence in January, likely wrapping in August, but this was before production was shut down due to the coronavirus. As of October 2020, production has begun on the season once again in Atlanta.

When does Stranger Things 4 starts filming?
Stranger things 4 officially started filming in February 2020. It was then shut down in March due to the pandemic. Scenes in Lithuania had already been filmed and the cast and crew were getting ready to film in Atlanta, Georgia at the time of shut down.
In October 2020, the cast returning to filming season 4. As of January 2020, season 4 is still being filmed.
Gaten Matarazzo explained to People that filming is "definitely a slower process than usual, which is really saying something because we take our sweet time making the show anyway."
Speaking to GalaxyCon Live, Gaten also explained that when he turns 18 at the start of September, there'll be no time restraints on the hours that he's allowed to work on set: "By the time I go back to filming, I turn 18 at the beginning of September … and at that point, because of the pandemic, we might not be back into filming. So I’ll be 18 and they can keep me as long as they need me without any time caps.”
Despite the delay in filming, writing for the season has officially been finished. So that's good news!
Stranger Things 4 is not the last season.
Though Netflix has yet to confirm that Stranger Things will return for a fifth season, the showrunners and executive producers Matt and Ross Duffer have opened up about the series' future. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter in August, the duo were asked if Season 4 would be the end of Stranger Things. Ross Duffer replied, "Season four won't be the end. We know what the end is, and we know when it is. [The pandemic] has given us time to look ahead, figure out what is best for the show. Starting to fill that out gave us a better idea of how long we need to tell that story." Incredible news for fans. So bring on Season 5!
Levy had previously told Entertainment Weekly in 2017, "The truth is we’re definitely going four seasons and there’s very much the possibility of a fifth. Beyond that, it becomes I think very unlikely."
