Safjoerur is a small town in the north-west of Iceland: nobody knew it before a solution was devised to protect pedestrians on the street, which literally conquered the world. What are we talking about? But of course the three-dimensional pedestrian strips around the globe: this is an optical effect that serves to protect pedestrians crossing the road. The 3D stripes are more visible to cars, which cannot fail to notice them on the street.
The success of the 3D pedestrian strips is also due to a video published in Youtube on September 25th, which in a very short time has been viewed by millions of people in every corner of the world: a video of 1 minute and 14 seconds made by Gusti Production, which tells us how these optical effects can help pedestrians to cross the road safely.
In the video, for example, you can see a pedestrian who enjoys jumping between one strip and another, as if he were a bunny rabbit, but also a mother with her children by bicycle who seem to fit perfectly between the blocks that, thanks to the optical effect, seem to float. No more static pedestrian zebras, which can go unnoticed by drivers.
The video and the project are useful to talk about road safety: pedestrians are certainly the most endangered category on the road and perhaps a technique of this kind can be useful to allow them to cross the road safely. If nothing else, a new idea, which seems to work.
The experiment, which started from a small street in Safjoerur, will now also be reproduced in other countries around the world, such as South Africa, China, India and Kyrgyzstan.
