Walkabout ~ Old and new Kuala Lumpur

in streetphotography •  7 years ago  (edited)

I have always been meaning to do a walkabout and get shots around the city of Kuala Lumpur ~ my city. Afterall, I am born and bred here. Its facets and the way it has grown, in all various ways, not just the development... makes it 'complicated', a love-hate relationship for me!

But, it is still 'home' to me.

I still have not done so - a proper walkabout pictorial capture, as I would like to one day... - but I caught some shots during a recent visit downtown.

And that, has now made me more determined to make another trip... soon...
These are what I managed to get while on a short walk through...

Slated for development... due to be demolished
What is the new without the old
What is a city or town without its history, what it used to be
Why don't they retain these old charming facets
That are far and few between
Look at the detailing on that façade
Sad to think it will all be gone soon

Graffiti or art?
Call it what you will
It adds colour and attitude to the city...

And this is a commissioned piece of sculpture,
one of a pair

All along these walkways, there are inserts of these patterned tiles, very 'Nyonya'-style (Peranakan Chinese or Straits-born Chinese) tilework
You can normally find these in their homes, decorating floors or entrance ways, sometimes the stairway at the front of the house
These are simple ones... The originals can sometimes be porcelain prettily hand-painted pieces, with embossed patterns
Nice to find these here...

Finally, maybe someone has the right idea... a couple of restored old shophouses, brightly painted; the yellow looks set to be taken over by some new occupants soon
Nice to see they've also kept sufficient green around this part of the city
In the background, you see the Dayabumi building which has an annexe housing the headquarters of the national postal services, Pos Malaysia

It will be interesting to see how the new Malaysian government handles, or should I say, manages development of the city, the capital of Malaysia...
Will the old be treasured and restored alongside a better planned development of the city, or better yet, a halt put to development altogether...
Do we need more development within KL?

These are spectacular shots and smooth writing. I wish I can get more of this. I always feel everyone's own city may be mundane in his/her own view but it is a exotic destination for someone else who has not been there. The first shot reminds me of old Calcutta, which was also a British colony, and the tile shot with red shoes for the contrast. Very original.

if its a squiggle its graffiti, if it looks like it took more than an hour, its art XD

Hahaha... good... - point taken! ;)

Kuala Lumpur, this city from it's humble beginnings sure has many hidden treasures.

It's true... Quite subtle, but if one looks hard enough... the treasures will be found... :)
Thank you, @kchitrah!

Beautiful Shots, lovely City

Thank you... for both compliments!! :))

These old building has always been the landmark and remind us about our past. Always stand tall...

So true, thank you, @steemflow!

Lovely walkabout @ackhoo agree wholeheartedly the beautiful old architecture should be preserved.

Those tiles are gorgeous and to think they are hand painted, I would love to see those bet they could tell a story or two.

Thank you, Joan! We both appreciate the old... lol... sadly, many don't and think they should make way for development!
Ohhh, I love those tiles too... I found this page you may be interested in, tells you a bit more about them and there are some lovely samples too! :)

Abandoned, one look at the work both in wood and tiles and no one to appreciate it, sad!

I love pictures of your street, it has full of characters. Malaysia streets looks modern and traditional.
