A little over two years ago now, @caitycat and I moved to Vancouver Island. I moved here for work as a civil engineer, and I knew there were opportunities, but I had no idea the extent of how much construction was happening over in this part of the province. Things are hustling and bustling. Within 3 blocks of our apartment, there are about 3 or 4 large open-pit high-rise condo excavations. There are new protected bike lanes going in everywhere. There are underground utility upgrades happening everywhere.
It seems like every other sidewalk has something precarious dangling overhead
It's an interesting vibe in the city right now. There's a mixture of:
- Construction workers enjoying the boom;
- Residents excited about upgrades;
- Residents frustrated about never ending construction;
- Residents / homeless that are being squeezed out of neighbourhoods;
- An influx of young people;
Personally, I'm really enjoying being an activity participant in upgrades to the city. I truly feel that many of the projects going on are essential for the liveability, longevity, and vibrancy of this city. I love getting to walk past a couple of the projects that I've helped design, and think that I've had a small part in shaping the future of the city, and have become part of the city's new history.
