I love these cobblestoned streets. I have some in my town from back in the colonial days. I think they said that they were put in the bottom of ships to steady them for the journey.
When they got here, they ditched them and they ended up being used to make streets.

I'll try to capture a similar image for next weeks' #streetphotography entry.

Yes they used stones for ballast in ships going to the colonies to pick up goods. They threw off the stones to make room for goods and started paving streets with them.
That was true in Charleston, SC where I used to live too.
I don't think thats why they paved the streets this way in Prague, however. I think it is more that they were a prosperous area and paved streets were a way of showing your wealth as well as being practicle.before it became more common.

This sounds like it.
I missed the comment up until now but have remembered it all week. I took some pics with my smartphone of our very popular Middle Street in Kingstown that's paved with these stones to enter in the contest. I'll tag you when I do.
