Kantung semar adalah tanaman karnivora yang memakan serangga, ulat, dan katak. Tanaman ini hidup sebagai karnivora (tanaman karnivora) karena hidup di daerah minimal nitrat dan unsur fosfat. Sebagai karnivora tanaman ini memiliki perangkat perangkap serangga dalam bentuk kantong atau pot, yang merupakan perubahan bentuk dari tipleaf.
Untuk mencerna tanaman mangsa ini memiliki enzim atau bahan kimia yang larut dalam kantong mereka. Sisa-sisa serangga dicerna, biarkan semut memakannya, sehingga antara semut dan semar tas terjadi simbiosis mutualisme. Tumbuhan ini juga masih melakukan fotosintesis untuk keperluan pati dan gula yaitu daun di pangkal batang yang rata dan berwarna hijau.
Kantong semar memiliki banyak spesies. Tanaman ini hidup di daerah hutan hujan tropis, mulai dari dataran rendah, menengah dan tinggi. Sebagian besar dari tanaman ini hidup di Australia bagian utara, Asia Tenggara, dan Cina bagian selatan. Ada 82 spesies nepenthes dan yang paling banyak ditemukan di Kalimantan dan Sumatera sebanyak 64 spesies.
