This morning I was reading about how Samuel had to choose a new king to follow Saul on the throne of Israel. He went to Isai as God had told him to anoint a new king among his sons. Everyone believed the firstborn, the biggest and the strongest, would be the selected. But, Samuel looked at him and said... where are the others? Then came the second, the third, the fourth, the fifth, and the sixth and the seventh! Samuel probably felt confused. Here Isai had been showing him all his sons, and none of them were the one Samuel was going to anoint.
I can easily imagine what it must have sounded like as Samuel asked Isai... is this everything? Don't you have any other sons?
Isai hadn't even taken David into consideration. He was smaller than the others, and he was out taking care of the animals. But, Samuel wanted to see David, and when he appeared, Samuel immediately knew that this is the one.
Do you know why? God doesn't look to the outside, but to the inside. He is interested in what is going on in your heart and what kind of person you really are. Don't worry about your outer appearance, because that isn't what God is interested. Build a strong character and be firm with your convictions!
Once again, inner strength is far more important than outer strength!
