What Stress Can Do to Your Body

in stress •  6 years ago  (edited)

when we are stressed, according to Dr. Redford Williams, our emotions leap into action :
1. Blood pressure increases
2. Adrenaline flows into the bloodstream
3. Muscles become tense

Prolonged and unresolved stress triggers the "flight and fight" response. When the response is triggered, the heart beats faster, more blood flows to the muscles to make them work more strongly, we breathe more quickly, so that we have the urgent ability to run for danger or fight an attacker.

The body may secrete many times the amount of gastric juices, and their acid can create a hole in the lining of the intestines, Dr. Williams explains. The stress hormones literally tears blood vessels, causing damage to your arteries. Once the damage is done, it can trigger a fatal heart attack.
