They are showing the Japanese version with English subtitles. But that didn't diminish its impact for me.
It is stunning, gorgeous and magical. I felt like a little kid at times, wanting to cry out "Look at that!" and "What's THAT?!" There's a new and unexpected wonder every moment and nothing is what you'd expect. Still, the core of the movie is timeless, the quest of the young hero, the boy, through magical realms within realms, braving dangers and wonders, to rescue his mother from the underworld.
Miyazaki's art is breathtaking. If you are not familiar with his work you might try watching Spirited Away. The Boy and the Heron feels like a deeper and more mature version of that story. There's nothing in the film that would be unsuitable, too frightening or disgusting, for kids to watch.
It starts out a bit slow but once it gets going its constant twists and reveals and non-stop pace are a bit overwhelming perhaps. But I'll be getting the Blueray for sure. That will be in the English dubbed version voiced by quite an all-star cast.
Highly recommended for young and old!
