Haworthia hybrid project update

in succulents •  6 years ago

We have pods! People use various implements as a brush when pollinating and I have enough cat whiskers lying around so I collected a few.

If pollination hasn't been successful, the spent flower withers and falls off the stalk, like with the Haworthia comptoniana hybrid, where I only have one pod so far. I'm pleased that I have had any success, as they are notoriously difficult to set seed on. That is probably why I had no success last time, I was using two plants with a reputation for being difficult to pollinate. I already knew that one was difficult, I didn't know that the other was the same!

Compare that with the bayeri, where almost every flower on the stalk has made seeds

I have 100% success rate with the argenteo-maculosa "White Clouds" so far and there are still some unripened flower buds on all of the stalks, so I am going to try some different combinations with some other plants which are about to flower because now there will be some overlap with these. As the pod continues to swell, the dried flower petals will drop off. Once the pod is fully grown, in a few weeks time, it must be taped closed to prevent the seeds being scattered everywhere when the pod dries and starts to crack open.

I'm so excited! The cat's whisker has done it's work. Although it will be at least 2 years before I can really see the results of my work, the only time to start is now.

Congratulations!!!
The whiskers of your cat work out their food.
Knowingly you feed cats ha-ha :-)))
Next time if you do not find a cat's mustache, try a bird feather. :-)))
I'm waiting for the result!
I am very pleased with your success!

A bird feather will be too big, the flowers are very small. I have 5 cats so there are always cat's whiskers :)

Great answer!!!

LOL your cats came in handy. I use Soju's dropped whiskers as lucky charms. Though they haven't been so lucky because I lose them lol.

I've never heard of cat's whiskers being lucky charms. Tell me more?

I didn't really do anything to them. When Soju dropped her first whiskers, I felt it would be a lucky charm and we could keep a bit of her with us while we are out and about. So I gave the first one to Soju's dad to keep in his wallet. And I kept the second one she dropped in my wallet. I used sticky tape to tape it but kept falling out until one day it just disappeared. So I waited for Soju to drop another, then another and another. Til I gave up. Obviously it wasn't a lucky.

Yay! Congrats on those :)
Never saw haworthia pods.. My ones are blooming but no bee is tempted to pollinate it.
Now I cant wait to see them germinate and create tiny plants.

Thanks! Yes, the bees don't seem to like them much. Apparently it is the solitary bees that do the work.
I also can't wait, I am producing as much seed as I can in case of disaster

Good work is raising new varieties of plants.

Trying, we will see

Proof that cats can totally help earn their keep! It would never have occurred to me to use a cat whisker... my auntie did the extremely fine bristle brush method, once in a while... mostly related to propagating fruit trees, as I recall.

=^..^=

I read about someone using a cat whisker on another forum. She wasn't successful, due to bad timing but I thought it worth a try

well done on such temperamental and intricate process.

Thank you!

What a great idea! I can't wait to see your creations grow.

Just warning you: it is a slow process

Congratulations!!
It would be nice to read about sowing results too and see photos of young plants! :)

You will!
