The most impossible flowers to photograph

in succulents •  7 years ago

I have never been able to catch Anacampseros flowers fully open, they seem to flower only under very particular weather conditions. Although I have heard that they flower in the afternoon and evening, the only time I have seen flowers was in the late morning and I always think "give it an hour of two and then it will be fully open". I go back later, only to find that it's closed!

This is the plant itself and as you can see, many buds, but never flowers.

Pink flowers are generally pollinated by insects but I don't know what purpose it serves for a flower to only be open for a few hours a day

great picture!

Well, purely as speculation: perhaps their opening times coincide with peak activity of a particular pollinator and opening at other times is detrimental due to 'thief' pollinators taking advantage.

That is possible, it is also possible that atmospheric or climatic conditions need to be right for pollination to occur

Wow. This is utterly fascinating. I've never seen this plant before. How can I get some, it would look good in my garden

It comes from dry parts of South Africa so it may not survive in your garden if your climate is very humid

Really a unique creation. Perfect capture, good to see this post. I like your post and Resteem done.

Anakamperos is a very beautiful plant, elusive to contemplate all its beauties ... I'm sure you'll still be able to see it in a beautiful beauty

Thise flowers not only they oper for few hours, but they usualy blooming ones is trilion years.

Hi @nikv
The flowers of Anacampseros rufescens are self-fertile, so the seeds you have should germinate just fine if they were pollinated. Once you have planted the seeds, keep them moist until they have germinated.

This is a succulent that does well under very dry conditions, so I think I would follow these general directions for starting cactus seeds. In your case, though, since you're starting only one kind of seed, it would be alright just to plant them in pots.

You can expect the seeds to germinate within 2 to 3 weeks. Keep the seeds at 70º F. after you plant them. I don't know where you're located (some parts of the country are very warm already, while it's still a bit chilly where I live), so keeping them warm may require placing the pots on a heating pad set on low.

Nature is a beautiful thing, and this flower respect nature. For the flower opening for few hours is still not understandable to me as a person. Hoped to know more about the flower. Thanks for sharing

they have their own little secret reasons! don't you think?
